VIDEO: Timelapse Art Journal Page - Gelli Plate Collage

Gelli Plate collage journal page by Kim Dellow

I've a little treat for you today. I was working on some art journal pages for my blog post today, thinking that I would do another art journal page share like I did for last Friday's blog post. But this time I decided to film the whole thing in case something came out of it. So instead of just sharing project pictures today with you today I have a little extra in the form of a timelapse video showing the whole process for this art journal share. I hope you enjoy it!

The page is built in my junk journal and I've used layers of paint with some Gelli plate prints using paints and stencils then used these printed papers to build up a focal point with layers. I didn't have time to add a voice over so it is just set to music, but if there is anything you want to know just ask either below in the comments or over on my YouTube Channel!

VIDEO: Textured And Layered Art Journal Page Using Stamped Layers And Watercolours

Kim Dellow Layered and textured art journal page

If you didn't think you could make a textured, layered watercolour art journal page then I hope that my video today will change your mind! We are all quite use to using acrylic paints to add layers to our art journal pages but how about watercolour layering? It is a little harder as watercolour will react to water even after it is dry but it is still possible to work on a watercoloured background without it washing away!

And as for adding texture with watercolours, well there are lots of methods some you might be very familiar with such as using large salt grains or crunched up cling film or Saran wrap, but there are other methods too like using stencils and I share one way to use your stencils to add texture to your watercolours today along with methods for layering and creating this art journal page.

Meanwhile here are some close up pictures of this project, I love the way that the stencil texture peeks through the butterfly!

VIDEO: DIY Patterned Paper Bird Journal Page

DIY Patterned Paper Art journal page by Kim Dellow

How are you getting on with your DIY patterned papers? Had a chance to make any yet? Well, okay it was only Monday that I posted my current 5 favourite fun DIY patterned paper techniques, you probably haven't had a chance to make any yet have you? Don't worry if you haven't as I just have some extra inspiration to share today on the same subject. It's a process video showing the making of this journal page using the very same patterned papers that I showed on Monday.

I don't know why but I have had this bird design journal page idea just floating around in my head for a while now. You know when you just keep coming back to an idea or an image and you need to get it out of your head and into real life? Well this is definitely one of those!

Hope you enjoyed the video, here are some close ups of the finished piece and you can see more of the details of the DIY patterned paper.

The gesso looks quite thick in the photos but you can just about see the papers coming through to add more texture than my camera can pick up. You can use white paint if you want to have a complete block for the bird to sit on.

I have a feeling that this bird is not out of my system yet! So what techniques will you be using to make your patterned papers? And then what will you make with them when you have them?

Abstract watercolour art by Kim Dellow, with a timelapse video

I've got my January Art Slice Videos Round-up for you today, a little bit later than I had intended. It was meant to go on my blog last Friday but I got all excited about a recent gallery visit and I ended up posting that on my blog instead, completely forgetting that it was the first Friday of the month so was actually Art Slice Round-up day!

Hey ho, so much for my editorial calendar! But better late than never? So here are some short snippets of inspiration to start your weekend with, hope you enjoy them.

VIDEO: Art Product Test - Magic Sponge

Recently I came across the 'Magic Sponge' which can lift dry watercolour paint from paper and was super curious about it, I mean who wouldn't be with a name like 'Magic Sponge'? So today I have a new video with a product test for the Magic Sponge.

If you haven't come across this product yet it is actually melamine foam which has really strong abrasive properties, i.e. it scrubs well! The structure of the foam is such that it acts like a super fine sandpaper. The funny thing is is that you may already have some in your home as it has been marketed as a cleaning product under various names for many years.

I don't know exactly when they started marketing it to artists as a watercolour eraser but I think it has been on the art product market for a good decade but you can correct me if I am wrong!

VIDEO: Art Product Test - Magic Sponge by Kim Dellow

[There are some affiliate links in this blog post, so if you buy through them I do get a small amount of money at no extra cost to yourself. Thanks for your support!]

For my test I have compared how it works with watercolour paints, Distress Crayons, Slick Stix, Distress Stain, Distress Ink and tried it out on hot and cold press watercolour paper as well as an ordinary cardstock. So sit back and enjoy the film!

Oh and keep an eye out for a sneak peek at one of my new stencil designs for PaperArtsy (SPOILER ALERT: it's pictured above if you missed it!).

VIDEO: Art Product Test - Magic Sponge

PRODUCTS USED:
Magic Sponge
Fabriano Classico 5 Fat Pad 300g/m (140lb)
Bockingford Watercolour paper cold press
Cardstock Smooth 290g/m
Winsor and Newton Watercolours
Prima Marketing Watercolor Confections Watercolor
Tim Holtz Distress Crayons Set
Crayola Twistables Slick Stix
Tim Holtz Distress Stain
Tim Holtz Distress Ink

Results of using magic sponge on different materials, with a video by Kim Dellow

Above is a close-up of the results on the different papers and colouring products. As I said is it an abrasive and I did use it on my stencil with no apparent ill effect. All though I personally don't think I would want to use it over and over again on the same stencil. I think it is cool for the occasional use to get specific effects, but I will leave you to make your own mind up about how you would like to use it!

And so that you can see the stencil again (*WINK*) here is a close-up of the results of the lifting of the watercolour paint through the stencil on the cold press watercolour paper.

close up of using Magic sponge through a stencil, video by Kim Dellow

Hope that the video was useful, I do plan to do more product testing from time to time so let me know if you have an art or craft product you would like to see in action and if I have it I will do my best to test it and video the results!

Meanwhile, don't forget to watch my last product test video which was the Tim Holtz Distress Crayons Versus Crayola Slick Stix face-off!

VIDEO: How To Make A Patterned Paper Flower Cluster Art Journal Page

Art Journal Page using cut outs by Kim Dellow

It's video time and this week I have an art journal page to share. For this video I thought it would be fun to use some patterned paper and a pen to make a flower cluster for my art journal page. I've got way too much patterned paper and I am trying to make good use of it, so this type of project is perfect! It is also a perfect project for using up oddments and those small pieces of paper that you just can't bring yourself to throw away. Well, I can't anyway!

So if you have too much patterned paper, like me, or a collection of bits of paper you need to find homes for, also guilty as charged, then you are going to love this project!

There is something really relaxing about cutting out bits of paper, isn't there? I do love a bit of collage. It's even more fun to then go and doodle your own flower designs over it!

I would love to hear what projects you have been using cut outs for and what you do with your left over patterned papers, so do let me know.

VIDEO: How To Make A Gouache Paint And Paint Pen Art Journal Page

How To Make A Gouache Paint And Paint Pen Art Journal Page video by Kim Dellow

Do you remember this project? I shared a little clip of it in December as one of my Art Slices videos for that month. Well this week I am sharing the whole project as a video. It's made using Gouache paint, a little bit of acrylic paint and line work with a paint pen. I've already mentioned here on my blog how I am enjoying playing with Gouache paints so they were a natural grab for me when making this page. Then the line work is really an extension of the work I have been doing over on Instagram with my #DellowDailyDrawing or my watercolour shares.

I hope that you enjoy the video showing how to make an art journal page using Gouache paint and a paint pen. I'm trying something new for me and my video making, I have used a mix of voice over and music, so you are seeing the whole page as it happens but as a timelapse to keep the video short. Let me know what you think!

I do love a bit of paint distressing, don't you? Have you used the technique I shared in my video to distress paint? And if you haven't do you think you will give it a go?

VIDEO: Rainbow Painted Mini-Notebook

New video time and another in my PaperArtsy Make and Take video series. If you haven't yet caught up with this series this is the third of four projects. The first I shared was the Seth Apter-Inspired Canvas Board and the second was the Decorated Tape Dispenser Project. I put together all these projects for PaperArtsy and then ran them as Make and Take projects for them at Crafting At Ally Pally in September last year.

But as I've been getting into videoing I decided to video the making of the samples and then share the projects here on my blog as well so that if you managed to do the make and take you have a handy refresher of what we did but if you didn't managed to make, it then you can now do a similar project at home, at your own pace watching the video.

So this week the project is the decorating of a notebook cover.

A painted rainbow notebook cover by Kim Dellow

All using PaperArtsy Stamps from three different designers (one of them me, in case you hadn't spotted my little lion!) and PaperArtsy Fresco Finish acrylic paints.

It is super bright and super textured, although you can't really see the texture in the photo above, but it is! I applied the paint in a particular way, as I show in the video, to give an almost ridges or lined texture to the cover.

And of course strong rainbow effect colours were all the rage last year in the mixed media world and this is a super fun way to add that effect to your projects too.

VIDEO: Art Slice December Round-Up

Doesn't 2016 seem so long ago now? I mean it has been, what, almost a week since it was 2016? And we have been back to work, planning 2017, drinking tea, all sorts of things! Well, before I completely forget 2016 (who am I kidding, I've already forgotten it!) I want to post my round-up of my December Art Slice videos.

At the start of December I really wasn't sure that I would have anything to share for my December Art Slice Round-up. I will let you into a little behind the scenes secret, my phone is not good enough to take high definition film. So at the moment I am actually using an old point and shoot camera and editing the films on my computer. I then upload them to my phone to put music on and to upload them to Instagram.

Behind the scenes of Kim Dellow Filming her Art Slice videos
[My filming 'studio']

I know, mad right? So, yeah if you could find a more complicated way to do a less than 60 second video I'm sure I would be doing it! You can guess they take me a lot longer than 60 seconds to put together can't you?!

But doing them has been such a help to me, first I have learnt a lot about video editing (and am still learning - obviously), second it has just simply made me do more filming, which was one of my goals for 2016 and is still one of my goals for 2017. The more you do the more the process becomes easier and you become better at it, just as with everything else.

So I would massively recommend that if making videos is one of your goals this year, but you have been finding it hard to get started, then try doing something small to break into it and challenge yourself to do it regularly.

Behind the scenes of Kim Dellow coming up with ideas for her Art Slice videos
[Idea generation and practice before filming!]

But of course the best part for me is if you have been enjoying them! If you have enjoyed any of my Art Slices or have been inspired by any of them, even just one of them, then that has made it all the more worthwhile for me and puts a huge smile on my face when you get in touch to let me know, so thank you to everyone who has!

So are you ready for my December's Art Slices?

Doodle Pattern

I love patterns and doodles and practicing my mark making, so this art slice was a random mark making doodle from my junk journal.

I could probably fill page after page like this, it is very therapeutic, try it!

Materials:
Junk Journal
Sharpie paint pens - black and white

 Flower Details

Some more flowers and some work on a page which was already covered with dripping experiments I had done to work out an article project from last year with.

This is actually a sneak peek from a larger journal page walk-through video that is on my list to voice over in the future! So keep an eye out for that.

Materials:
Junk journal https://goo.gl/sDX2qn
Sharpie Paint pen water-based, Black

Drawing Exercise - Mushrooms

Yesterday I told you about my new daily drawing exercise challenge to myself for 2017 and how you can join in too, well here is the Art Slice video of it in action!

It was fun changing pens, it forces you to think up other ways of drawing the subject, great tip if you are finding it hard to come up with new forms of whatever you are drawing.

Materials:
Pitt Big Brush Artist Pens
Sharpie Paint pens Ballpoint pens
Waterbrush
Sakura Micron Pigma pen
 A4 sketch book

Quick Technique With Crayola Slick Stix

This was actually a request video from Magia (@Magia_Guarini  on Twitter) asking for some Slick Stix ideas.

I really love using the Slick Stix with water to drip and these colours work so well together and blend nicely. If you want some other ideas for both Slick Stix and Distress Crayons I have a video with some suggestions called 'Tim Holtz Distress Crayons Versus Crayola Twistables Slick Stix' you can watch.

Materials:
Crayola Slick Stix
Canvas board Golden
Glass Bead gel
The Crafter's Workshop Corncob Etching
Brush
Water

I hope that you enjoyed my little behind the scenes secrets and December's Art Slices. My next Art Slice will be out on my YouTube Channel at 1pm (GMT) today and at around 7pm (GMT) over on my Instagram channel.

VIDEO: Decorated Tape Dispenser Project

Welcome to my first video project of 2017! It's another from my make and takes that I did for PaperArtsy for the Crafting At Ally Pally show, and this one is sharing how to decorate a wooden tape dispenser with stamping and paint. But don't worry if you don't have a wooden tape dispenser! The techniques I share in this video will also work on boxes, picture frames, well all sorts of three
dimensional items.

A decorated tape dispenser by Kim Dellow using stamps and paints

This three dimensional item is made from untreated wood so I've used the PaperArtsy Fresco Finish acrylic paints directly on the surface. If you are using varnished wood or plastic objects then you may want to treat the surface with some gesso first to provide a surface that the paint can stick to.

VIDEO: Decorated Tape Dispenser

You can see all the steps from start to finish for this project in this video, perfect for if you are thinking about doing a similar project or if you have got your hands on one of these tape dispensers and wasn't sure where to start.

Materials:
PaperArtsy Fresco Finish Acrylic Paints: Snowflake, Vanilla, Coral, Bubble gum, Caribbean Sea, South Pacific - (UK) That's Crafty; (US) Simon Says Stamp

I'm looking forward to sharing some more videos with you so keep your eyes peeled for them. Or better still if you subscribe to my YouTube channel and click the notifications button then you will know as soon as my next video goes live.

Meanwhile here are some more pictures of this project!

My 5 Favourite Art Videos of 2016

I have been trying to do more video content this year. It has been a bit of a learning curve, as with all these things, but I am now getting into the swing of it and I hope that I can get some more video content out to you in 2017. In fact I was going to post a new video today as part of my PaperArtsy Make and Take series but I have decided to save it and kick off the new year with the rest of my 2016 Make and Take videos, so I hope you will enjoy them.

Instead, today I thought I would start my year in review posts with a look back at five of my, and hopefully your, favourite art videos of mine from 2016 plus a couple of links to some other favourites from other people.

But first a little introduction to some of the videos I have been making this year.

Different Types Of Videos

This year I have made four types of videos for my YouTube channel:

Project How-Tos - which are start to finish walkthroughs showing how to make a specific project.
Tips and Tricks - with little shares of ideas to help your work or to use in your work.
Product Testing - trying out a new product and what it can do.
Art Slice - which are little snippets of weekly art inspiration.

I'm planning to do more titles under all of these headings so watch this space! Let me know if there is something else as well you would like to see me cover, I am open to suggestions.

What Is Your Favourite?

So probably my favourite video from the whole year, and most definitely your favourite video of mine this year, was the 'Get The Faux Print Look' video.

This year found me exploring printed looks and trying to get the look in different ways. For this video I shared a screen printed look that did not use screen printing. It did use the credit-card method for adding paint though, which is one of my favourite ways to apply paints and I'm glad to say that lots of you fell back in love with it too after seeing this video!

My next favourite video from this year has to be 'One Stamp Three Ways' which was a video hop/ collaboration with two amazing card makers Sharon Curtis and Michelle Short.

Michelle Short and Sharon Curtis are two seriously talented creators and I was very excited and happy to be able to work with them both on a project. I always love watching both their YouTube channels, so they are definitely on my suggested watching list! It was as extra special collaboration as it randomly came out of us chatting about making videos on Facebook and from that we all made a video using one of my PaperArtsy stamp sets released this year. So I feel especially honoured to see what amazing projects they came up with with my stamps.

My next two favorite videos are both from my Art Slice videos - Watercolour Worlds, which is the first one below, and Brush Pen Bloom, the second video below.

I started the Art Slice videos this year as just a quick, less than a minute, snippet of whatever art I had been making that week. And I've been posting one a week since around about the Summer. At first I was just going to put them on Instagram but then I decided to put them on YouTube too, it makes it easier to see them all under one Playlist. I hope you have been enjoying them, they have been a great way for me to get into the habit of filming more without the stress of doing voice overs, which I find the hardest thing to do at the moment!

The final favourite I have of mine to share is also from my Art Slice playlist.

It was my Halloween offering and a little bit of fun. The reason it is one of my favourites from this year is the little cheeky nod to animation at the end of the film, a little rough and unsophisticated but I enjoyed making it!

Just a small selection of some of my own favourite videos from this year, I would love to know what yours are (not just of mine!).

I'm going to leave you with a link to a super cute video from Iraville's YouTube Channel of the cutest little fluffy Robin red breast done in watercolour that you ever did see. Enjoy! And do leave links to any of your favourite videos at the moment in the comments below.

VIDEO: Seth Apter-Inspired Canvas Board PaperArtsy Make and Take

Back in September this year I did some Make and Takes for PaperArtsy in the Crafting At Ally Pally show, I filmed all the make and takes whilst I was designing and making them but I haven't had a chance to edit and add a voice over. Well until now that is! Starting this week I have my first PaperArtsy Make and Take video to share with you and this one is all about Seth Apter products.

The canvas board uses products from Seth Apter's PaperArtsy, Impressions Obsessions, StencilGirl and Spellbinders range, plus the PaperArtsy Fresco Finish acrylic paints. VIDEO: November Art Slice Round-Up

It is here! It is the month of Christmas! Ooops, I mean it is December everyone.  I know, crazy, right? So as it is the first Friday of the new month I have a quick round-up of my November Art Slice videos, all here in one place. Hope you have been enjoying watching them on Instagram, Youtube or Facebook as they go up week by week.

So shall we start at the beginning of the month?

[I do use affiliate links and there are some in this blog post.]

Liquitex Ink Muted Collection Flowers

The beginning of November found me trying the new Muted Collection colours inks from Liquitex.

I really love the muted collection colour palette. It is like a muted version of jewel colours, which are my favourite colours, so am a little obsessed by this collection at the moment.

Materials Used:
Fabriano 5 Watercolour paper
Liquitex Inks Muted Colour Collection
Jackson's : Icon : Sable Synthetic Mix : Watercolour Brush : Quill : No.10/0

Bubble Art Journal

The next video still finds me experimenting with the Liquitex Muted Collection to make an art journal page.

I started this page with some of the heavy body Muted Collection spread on the surface the I pressed a 'dirty' piece of bubble wrap into the nearly wet surface so that the paint residue on the bubble wrap stayed on the page when the wrap was lifted off. This way you get a bit for texture. Once this was dry I then went on to adding the swirls with the paint pen.

Materials Used:
Junk Journal
Old plastic gift card/ credit card
Liquitex Heavy Body Muted Violet
Liquitex Heavy Body Muted Pink
Liquitex Heavy Body Muted Grey
Liquitex Heavy Body Medium Magenta
Liquitex Heavy Body Titanium White
Liquitex Soft Body Cerulean Blue Hue
Liquitex Soft Body Prism Violet
Bubble wrap
Sharpie Water-based extra fine point Pen White

Ballpoint Pen and Watercolour

I finally tore myself away from the Muted Collection to go back to some brights and a journal page using different coloured ballpoint pens.

I started this page with a layer of Absorbent Ground which is a great ground for watercolours when you are working on a surface that doesn't usually work well with watercolour.

Materials Used:
Junk Journal
Papermate InkJoy 100
Staedtler Ball 432
Winsor and Newton Watercolour
Jackson's : Icon : Sable Synthetic Mix : Watercolour Brush : Quill : No.10/0
Golden Absorbent Ground

Orange And Aqua Journal Page

Another ballpoint pen page and flowers seem to be a big theme with me at the moment!

For this one I used gouache to block out the background after finishing the flower sketch.

Materials Used:
Junk Journal
Turner Gouache
ballpoint pen
Jackson's : Icon : Sable Synthetic Mix : Watercolour Brush : Quill : No.10/0

I hope that you are enjoying these mini videos, my next one will be out on my YouTube Channel at 1pm (GMT) today and at around 7pm (GMT) over on my Instagram channel.

VIDEO: Art Slice October Round Up

Hi Everyone, would you believe it? November is here! I know, crazy! But before we completely get into a new month of Art Slice videos let's have a recap of October's Art Slices shall we?

October found me playing with gouache and watercolours again and I have three films to share with you, if you haven't seen them already, and all three use different techniques. I hope you enjoy them and feel inspired to make your own Art Slice!

[I do use affiliate links and there are some in this blog post.]

So here are October's Art Slice videos:

Mark Making With Household Objects

Marking making with household objects is such good fun and for this video I used bottle tops, cotton buds (Q-tips) and an old toothbrush for some mixed media colour.

Materials:
Toilet roll tube
Bottle lid
Cotton bud
Toothbrush - old!
Caran d'Ache : Studio Gouache
Bockingford : Spiral Fat Pad
Winsor and Newton Galeria white Gesso

Book Page Blooms

Back to a favourite of mine watercolour-look flowers. I'm really enjoying gouache at the moment and I often jump between using gouache and watercolours for these types of projects. These flowers use gouache and are really simple but very effective, old book pages make everything look good, right?! I have some up-coming projects that I thought they might work well for, so keep your eye out for them!

Materials:
Old book pages
Turner Acrylic Gouache Japanesque Colours Tenmyouya's Collaboration
Jackson's : Icon : Sable Synthetic Mix : Watercolour Brush : Quill : No.10/0

Halloween Pumpkin

The last of my October Art Slice videos was a little bit of Halloween fun! I do love to do something silly and fun for Halloween and this year I made a little pumpkin illustration/ animation. If you haven't seen this one yet, then watch it through to the end!

Materials:
Prima Marketing Watercolor Confections Watercolor - Tropicals
Ballpoint pen
Fabriano Classico 5 Fat Pad 300g/m (140lb)
Jackson's : Icon : Sable Synthetic Mix : Watercolour Brush : Quill : No.10/0

That is it for October, but if you are wondering why there are only three videos, it was mine and David's anniversary so we took a week off!

I will have my first November Art Slice out later today so do sign up to my Instagram and YouTube channel to see it there first. If you click on the notifications for my YouTube channel it even lets you know when I have a new video to watch!

Have a fun Friday!
