VIDEO: Easy watercolor mixed media flower art

Watercolor and gel medium don't mix, right? Well, oddly enough I love working with gel medium and watercolor together, you just get the most amazing textures and effects. Take for instance my video this week. It's a super easy, mixed media flower art tutorial that uses glass bead gel and watercolor. I know, crazy! But look how much fun it is! And all that amazing texture.

But I have a confession, I made a totally rookie mistake! Got a bit too excited and threw caution to the wind when I really should have been patient and waited. Be patient? Yeah, that word is so not in my vocabulary! Anyway, I won't spoil the fun, you can watch what mistake I made and how I fixed it too in the video!

PaperArtsy Found Object Gel Skin

I was on the PaperArtsy blog recently with a project for their Found Objects theme, did you see it? I decided to go for a gel skin-based project using an old washer and a large grommet both found in the street, 'coz that is what I do, I find rubbish in the street and recycle it into art. Basically I am a Womble, except I don't live on Wimbledon Common. No the prices are too high in Wimbledon, I'm more an East London girl!

There is also an piece of old comic book in this project, found in my stash of old comic books for the purpose of art making and also I used some tissue paper found in some packaging of a parcel. So all of it is made from found objects. Well except the stamps, pencils and gel parts!

I love how the tissue paper has become practically invisible in the final project. To make it I placed a piece of comic book on some tissue paper and stamped the electro heart and border stamps that I designed for PaperArtsy EKD04. Then I used a mix of Prismacolor pencils and Faber-Castell Polychromo pencils to colour the heart. 

To make the gel skin and incorporate the image in it, I first added a layer of Liquitex Pouring Medium to an area the size of the tissue paper that I had marked off on an old plastic bag. Then I layered the tissue paper and comic book page on top of the gel and added the washer and grommet where I wanted them to be. Then I added another layer of Pouring medium over the top to cover the tissue paper and found objects and added some sprinkles of the Royal Blood Infusions, also from PaperArtsy. 

Once this was mostly dry I pealed the gel skin off of the plastic backing and let it dry completely. The skin with the tissue and  found pieces almost looks as if it is a resin piece doesn't it? Except it is quite flexible. 

To turn the washer and grommet into functional holes to hang the piece from I then just cut out the gel skin and tissue from the centre of each with a craft knife. then all that is left is deciding how to show it and for this I decided to use wire. Initially my idea was to hang it like a banner in the window so that you can see the light coming through and get the most out of the translucent effect but this proved harder to do as I don't have an appropriate hook to hang it from. So in the end I went for a wire stand held in a small jug.

Using Pencils With Your Stencils

Today I am using pencils with my stencils again! Ok, that kind of rhymes doesn't it? Pencils with my stencils, it makes me think of bananas in pyjamas coming down the stairs for some reason! Any ho, moving rapidly on, I've not lost it, honest. Well, I might have lost it but how would I know?!

The pencils I am using with my stencils today are the Derwent Graphitints and a Stabilo All. Both these types of pencils are watersoluble and perfect for using with stencils.

My last pencils with stencil share was using them for a bit of stencil rubbing and if you want to see that go check my video showing the process on my YouTube channel. This time I'm using the pencils directly through the stencil and the stencil I am using is one of my own designs for PaperArtsy, the PS046 stencil. I'm working in one of my junk journals on a page that I've treated with a layer of gesso first. I started by scribbling through the stencil with the Graphitint pencils and then, after the pencil colour was down, I added some water to each of the colour areas with a waterbrush.

One of my favorite pencils is the Stabilo All and I used this last to add the dark background and flicked texture.

AS FEATURED ON: The PaperArtsy Blog - Little Door

Are you fascinated by doors? I am! Totally beguiled by them. What do you think it is that is so enticing about them? For me I think it is the idea of all the wonderful possibilities that may lie behind them. What about you? Is that the same for you?

Well if, like me, you are enchanted by doors then the challenge over on the PaperArtsy blog at the moment might be perfect for you as it is all about Windows, Doors and Architecture. Yesterday it was my turn to be on the blog so I made this interactive art journal page.

I went with a grungy look using DecoArt black modeling paste roughly through the Retro shapes stencil I designed for PaperArtsy PS040. I was going for a street look, rough and dirty with an odd little door that you might have just walked past without seeing. It looks out of place so almost magical.

So I didn't need the whole stencil design in the background just touches of it to add texture to the background. I also added in lines to ground the door so that it wasn't just free-floating and to give an idea of the larger architecture that the door might belong to.

The door is from the PaperArtsy HP1601 stamp set and is a lovely architectural feature, but have you spotted the interactive part of my project, yet?  Ok so it isn't so secret! Yes, I've made the doors so that they open and there is something hidden behind them.

If you want to do this too, it is really simple. First you just add a little space so that you can put something behind the doors. To add this dimension I've first stamped the image on cardboard from an old box, trimmed it down into a frame that is smaller than the door image. I then stamped the door on paper painted brown and again on paper painted purple and cut out the frame and doors separately from those images but making sure that you have an overlap on the door part so that you can stick the overlap to the back of the frame.

I also made sure that the back of the doors had some colour too so that when they were open you still get that splash of colour on the inside of the doors. Then it is just a case of layering up the cardboard, doors and door frame and sticking the panel to the background.

For the little secret behind the door I made a flower using one of the circle flowers from the EKD06 set and a leaf from the EKD05 set that I designed for PaperArtsy and put them on a stem of wire coiled around a pen. Because they are on coiled wire they can easily 'pop' put when the door is open but you can push them back in to the gap made by the cardboard frame so that they are hidden again when the door is closed.

Voila, a cute, grungy, interactive project.

VIDEO: Technique: PaperArtsy Infusions Coloured Gel Medium

What is that you say? Another video?! That is right! I have a surprise, bonus video to share with you today sharing a fun technique using PaperArtsy Infusions to colour gel medium. So rather than just a static blog post share of my project I have a video walking through the whole process of how to use Infusions to Colour Gel Medium and then use the gel through a stencil.

Like the video that I made for the Gelli Printed Collage Art journal page from a couple of weeks ago, it is all to music with no voice over. But hopefully it is clear what I am doing and if you have any question then please do just ask in the comments!

You can use this technique with any powdered pigments and I first shared it a while back for my 'How To Decorate A Mesh Bag With Ken Oliver Color Burst' blog post whilst I was working for Blitsy. In that blog post I used the Ken Oliver's Colour Burst, to colour gel medium and decorate a pencil case. You can also use Brushos too with this technique but this time I am using Infusions.

The PaperArtsy Infusions are another powdered pigment product but they differ from Brushos and Colour Burst in that they also have a walnut stain crystal in with the pigment. The walnut stain develops more slowly than the pigment when you use the product with liquids and so you get a brown colour developing after the colour has developed. The walnut gives the Infusion colour an interesting antiqued and textured look.

But when you use the Infusions mixed in with gel medium, like the Golden Regular Gel the walnut doesn't develop but instead the crystals act as a grit to give the surface a texture when the gel is dry. Take a look at the close up photograph below to see what I mean!

Two tips for you: you need to use the gloss gel as this is completely transparent when dry and add as little or as much Infusions as you need, tap them on the gel bit by bit and just mix them in.

It's totally fun to play with so watch the video and then go have a play yourself!

VIDEO: Textured And Layered Art Journal Page Using Stamped Layers And Watercolours

If you didn't think you could make a textured, layered watercolour art journal page then I hope that my video today will change your mind! We are all quite use to using acrylic paints to add layers to our art journal pages but how about watercolour layering? It is a little harder as watercolour will react to water even after it is dry but it is still possible to work on a watercoloured background without it washing away!

And as for adding texture with watercolours, well there are lots of methods some you might be very familiar with such as using large salt grains or crunched up cling film or Saran wrap, but there are other methods too like using stencils and I share one way to use your stencils to add texture to your watercolours today along with methods for layering and creating this art journal page.

New PaperArtsy Eclectica³ {Kim Dellow} Products Showcase: Anneke De Clerck

It is a real treat to be able to post another set of stunning art from another amazing Artist. Yesterday we were delighted by lots of gorgeous clean and simple design inspiration from Michelle Short using the new the PaperArtsy Eclectica³ {Kim Dellow} stamps and stencils. If you missed it you can catch up with it in yesterday's Showcase blog post.

Today we have the gorgeous work of Anneke De Clerck and her lovely samples using these new products. Anneke works with mixed media and she is amazing at layering.

So let's kick off with a bright and cheery tag with lots of layers first.

Anneke has used one of the small flower stencils from PS048 and I think I even spot one of the stamps from my first PaperArtsy release EKD01 to make the background. Then she has used stamps from the new EKD04 to build up the foreground.

Next is a lovely single stem circle flower with stamps again from EKD04 and EKD05. The sentiment is from EKD01.

Next up is a pair of beautiful tags which have so many amazing layers that I might actually miss which products she has used! So forgive me if I do! I spot the retro shapes stencil PS040 with stamps from EKD06. Then layering of the small flowers stencils PS048 used in different ways. Very cleverly and beautifully done!

I love Anneke's use of colour and you can see that in this tag which uses the leaf stencil from PS048 and stamps from EKD06. And for another completely different look scroll down to the next card and the pattern Anneke has made using the small round stamp from EKD06.

Some more layering and Use of the small circle again from EKD06 plus one of the flowers from that set too.

For this next project can you spot all the stamping work in the background? Anneke has made some more patterns this time using the heart stone stamp from EKD06, and you can see the hearts again as a little highlight in the bottom left-hand corner.

There is also some texture from the texture stamp in EKD05 and a great use of a small flower stencil from PS048 to make a focal point. The sentiment is from EKD02.

For the final samples Anneke has gone all textured with some texture paste through the large flower stencil PS046, and I just love the way she has coloured this!

New PaperArtsy Eclectica³ {Kim Dellow} Products Showcase: Michelle Short

It is a little nerve wracking asking people to work with something new that you have designed. I don't know if other designers feel this too but there is something amazing about seeing the sketches that you did being turned into products that other people are, hopefully, going to have fun with.

So seeing the way that Michelle Short and Anneke De Clerck breathed life into these products for the February Release of the new stamps and stencils in the PaperArtsy Eclectica³ {Kim Dellow} range with their beautiful samples brings me real joy. I wanted to share that joy here on my blog with a blog post dedicated to each of these talented designers and showcasing their lovely samples.

So I will kick off today with a showcase of Michelle Short's beautiful work. Michelle has a wonderful clean and simple style to her work and for her samples she has made some beautiful cards and tags.

I love how Michelle uses negative space and dimension in her work with great colouring and the odd splash of ink and paint from time to time! For her first sample above she has used the retro-electro heart (I so hope that name sticks!) and frame from EKD04.

The next sample (below) she has used one of the small flower stencils from the PS048 stencil and embossed it into her background. Totally love that effect. The butterfly is from EKD05.

In this next card Michelle has used the large flower stamp from EKD06 with the leaves from EKD05 and some lovely colouring and masking to make this stunning focal flower. Just gorgeous!

The next two samples are matching tags and so clever with stamps from EKD06 plus the sentiment stamp from my original release set EKD01. In the first tag also uses the texture stamp from EKD05 but if you move down to the second tag you will spot the large flower stencil PS046 embossed into the background.

How totally gorgeous are these samples? Big, Big thank you Michelle for these wonderful samples!

New PaperArtsy Eclectica³ {Kim Dellow} Stamp And Stencil Release February 2017

You guys know I am a bit circle obsessed and from what I've heard from you, a lot of you are too! Which is great news because my new designs for PaperArtsy. have lots of circles and circles flowers and I can not wait to see what you do with them.

Yes it is NEW PRODUCT release time. I have three new stamps sets and three new stencils as part of the PaperArtsy Eclectica³ {Kim Dellow} range. The new stamps do follow on from my earlier release last year but this year I thought I would change it up a little bit. I've been hankering after some mixed flowers and longing for a large flower, big is best right?! Plus I have some frames, a butterfly and what I am calling retro-electro heart.

I hope that you have lots of fun with them!

For the stencils I've continued with the floral theme for two of the stencils and there is one large flower stencil and a stencil with three smaller flowers and a leaf. But get this - you also get the mask for these stencils too as they come nested in the mylar sheet they have been cut from (don't throw it away!), you just need to nip them out and you have a stencil and a mask, two for the price of one!

The third stencil is a more abstract cluster of retro-style circles and rectangles and very much designed with texture and pattern in mind. It's going to be fun to see where we can go with these new designs!

I love everything from clean and simple card making to mixed media messiness and art journaling so it is important to me that the products have multiple uses and can be applied to different types of projects.

But who better to showcase this than my two amazing release day wingmen Anneke De Clerke and Michelle Short?! Both of these talented artists have different have made some amazing samples for this launch of these new products. It is a real joy to see them bring these products to life! I've also got some of my own samples to share with you this week starting with the making of this journal page using the large flower stencil PS046, the retro shapes stencil PS040, the small flower stencils PS048 and the line stamp from the EKD04 stamp set.

You can see from the film that there are so many ways to use the stencils, for example, I've used the whole retro shapes stencil to add texture to the collage pieces but then used it again, but only a part of it to add a bit of focal point detail and interest to the centre of the flower as you can see in this close up picture below.

I doodled in the little retro rectangles background but if you remember back to the EKD03 set there was a similar design in that set that you could use instead! So totally mix and match.

VIDEO: How To Decorate A Wood Block

I'm excited today because I have another new project video to share with you! This week my video share is the last in my current PaperArtsy Make and Take video series and if you love the fabulous Lin Brown stamp range then you are going to love this video!

VIDEO: Rainbow Painted Mini-Notebook

New video time and another in my PaperArtsy Make and Take video series. If you haven't yet caught up with this series this is the third of four projects. The first I shared was the Seth Apter-Inspired Canvas Board and the second was the Decorated Tape Dispenser Project. I put together all these projects for PaperArtsy and then ran them as Make and Take projects for them at Crafting At Ally Pally in September last year.

But as I've been getting into videoing I decided to video the making of the samples and then share the projects here on my blog as well so that if you managed to do the make and take you have a handy refresher of what we did but if you didn't managed to make, it then you can now do a similar project at home, at your own pace watching the video.

So this week the project is the decorating of a notebook cover.

All using PaperArtsy Stamps from three different designers (one of them me, in case you hadn't spotted my little lion!) and PaperArtsy Fresco Finish acrylic paints.

It is super bright and super textured, although you can't really see the texture in the photo above, but it is! I applied the paint in a particular way, as I show in the video, to give an almost ridges or lined texture to the cover.

And of course strong rainbow effect colours were all the rage last year in the mixed media world and this is a super fun way to add that effect to your projects too.

VIDEO: Decorated Tape Dispenser Project

Welcome to my first video project of 2017! It's another from my make and takes that I did for PaperArtsy for the Crafting At Ally Pally show, and this one is sharing how to decorate a wooden tape dispenser with stamping and paint. But don't worry if you don't have a wooden tape dispenser! The techniques I share in this video will also work on boxes, picture frames, well all sorts of three
dimensional items.

This three dimensional item is made from untreated wood so I've used the PaperArtsy Fresco Finish acrylic paints directly on the surface. If you are using varnished wood or plastic objects then you may want to treat the surface with some gesso first to provide a surface that the paint can stick to.
