VIDEO: Art Slice October Round Up

Hi Everyone, would you believe it? November is here! I know, crazy! But before we completely get into a new month of Art Slice videos let's have a recap of October's Art Slices shall we?

October found me playing with gouache and watercolours again and I have three films to share with you, if you haven't seen them already, and all three use different techniques. I hope you enjoy them and feel inspired to make your own Art Slice!

[I do use affiliate links and there are some in this blog post.]

So here are October's Art Slice videos:

Mark Making With Household Objects

Marking making with household objects is such good fun and for this video I used bottle tops, cotton buds (Q-tips) and an old toothbrush for some mixed media colour.

Materials:
Toilet roll tube
Bottle lid
Cotton bud
Toothbrush - old!
Caran d'Ache : Studio Gouache
Bockingford : Spiral Fat Pad
Winsor and Newton Galeria white Gesso

Book Page Blooms

Back to a favourite of mine watercolour-look flowers. I'm really enjoying gouache at the moment and I often jump between using gouache and watercolours for these types of projects. These flowers use gouache and are really simple but very effective, old book pages make everything look good, right?! I have some up-coming projects that I thought they might work well for, so keep your eye out for them!

Materials:
Old book pages
Turner Acrylic Gouache Japanesque Colours Tenmyouya's Collaboration
Jackson's : Icon : Sable Synthetic Mix : Watercolour Brush : Quill : No.10/0

Halloween Pumpkin

The last of my October Art Slice videos was a little bit of Halloween fun! I do love to do something silly and fun for Halloween and this year I made a little pumpkin illustration/ animation. If you haven't seen this one yet, then watch it through to the end!

Materials:
Prima Marketing Watercolor Confections Watercolor - Tropicals
Ballpoint pen
Fabriano Classico 5 Fat Pad 300g/m (140lb)
Jackson's : Icon : Sable Synthetic Mix : Watercolour Brush : Quill : No.10/0

That is it for October, but if you are wondering why there are only three videos, it was mine and David's anniversary so we took a week off!

I will have my first November Art Slice out later today so do sign up to my Instagram and YouTube channel to see it there first. If you click on the notifications for my YouTube channel it even lets you know when I have a new video to watch!

Have a fun Friday!

Spooky Show Your Face

Hallow Facers, welcome to the spooky edition of Show Your Face, if you are of a delicate constitution then you may not want to scroll downnnnnn...

Mwahahahaha *Evil Laughter*

It's ok, it is only me, getting into the Halloween spirit! It's Show Your Face as normal but my share this week has a spooky twist.

Before we get started don't forget that next week it is November so we have a theme/ prompt - In The Style Of  - November 2015 (examine our favourite established artists, incorporate what they do through our own face practise) for anyone who wants to have an excuse to try something different. Totally optional, you don't have to use the theme or you can push your boundaries and give it a go, up to you.

Also the social media hashtag has evolved to #ShowYourFaceFriday thanks to the guys on Instagram for making great use of it and owning it!

Ok, let's Spook this!

First up the admin...

Schedule:
  • In The Style Of  - November 2015 (examine our favourite established artists, incorporate what they do through our own face practise)
  • Focus On Eyes - January 2016 (break out of our normal practice and try different styles of doing eyes such as traditional, cartoon, manga etc. As suggested by Susana Magenheimer)
  • Inspired By - March 2016 (pick fellow Facers to inspire our work this month)
Feel free to let me know if you have any more themes or ideas for Show Your Face.

Don't forget:
  • Show Your Face is a community link up for portrait work in any style or medium.
  • the aims are to share, learn, practise, inspire, and be inspired.
  • to make sure that the face artwork is yours, if you use any stamps or templates to build the face they should be designed by you.
  • the link is open from 10 am (BST) every Friday and stays open for a week, so link away.
  • finished pieces, works in progress or retro posts (i.e. older works, not from this week) are all welcome.
  • to link back to the link blog post here for that week.
  • Spread the word on your blog/social media outlets and use the #ShowYourFaceFriday hashtag in social media.

Looking For The Blog Button?

If you want to wear the blog button with pride then hop on over to Show Your Face 31st July 2015 to grab it and there are instructions on how to put it on your blog there too.

My Share This Week...

A study of light and shade in a face

Scary? Not scary? What do you think? I didn't set out to make a scary face this week, I was just looking at the negative space on a very shaded face with a light source above and to the front. I like the added texture of the watercolour pooled in the brush strokes of the gel medium that I used to stick the book pages down.

Close up of the watercolour and gel medium texture

Over To You...

Link your faces artwork and spread the word on your blog and/or social media, hashtag #ShowYourFaceFriday. Please do let anyone you think would be interested in sharing their portraits know about our community here.

Catch you later Face-Artinators

Freaky Friday All Hallows' Eve

***CRACK RUMBLE RUMBLE***

***KNOCK   KNOCK   KNOCK***

***

***

***CLINK SCRAPE CLINK JINGLE***

***CREEEEEEKKK***

Hello? Ahhh, Welcome to Kimberley Towers.

What is that you say? Your car has broken down and you want to use our phone?

Oh Yeeesssss, we have a phone...

***CRACK RUMBLE RUMBLE***

But do come in out of the rain. Ghastly night isn't it? What? The storm only seemed to start as you walked up our drive?

Mmmm, strange that....

Oh the mistress is busy. Yes always busy making things...in her workshop...all manner of strange things...yeeeesss. No you can't see any of them at the moment.

But let me show you to the phone, it is at the end of this long, dark corridor and we can look at all these past makes on the wall as we walk through.

This one was made after an scandalous stay in a place far, far away, the blood ran that night I can tell you. Oh yeeesss, warm and gooey and red...

I'm sorry, where were we? Oh yeeesss, cobwebs? Yeeesss the maid disappeared sometime ago. You just can not get the staff you know.

Mistress left instructions on how to make those cobwebs and blotchy background in what she calls 'a tutorial' if you are interested.

Ahh these two sisters were such sweethearts, a bit mischievous yeeeesss, but girls will be girls you know? Tragic it was tragic, ***sigh***

It is funny, but sometimes I think I catch a glimpse of them in the corner of my eye or hear a giggle ring through the corridors. But it is just not possible after...the accident...yeeesss, tragic it was.

Oh yeeesss and then there was that fun visit to Dr Jekyll. Oh he was a one, always testing some half-brewed concoction out on his visitors. We still have a bottle of his latest brew in the wine cellar.

Mmm, that reminds me, where are my manners? Perhaps you would like a drink whilst you wait for help to arrive? Mmmm?

***CRACK RUMBLE RUMBLE***

Ahh, now you are very privileged to be able to see this one, oh yeeesss, a rare insight into the laboratory of one of the greatest alchemists there ever was, Morticia E'val. Oh, her brews were noxious indeed and always took the form of pretty little cupcakes...

Perhaps I can tempt you with something to eat whilst you wait too? I'm sure she left us a box after her last visit...

This picture? Oh this one is of one of mistress's best friends, in fact there is quite a funny story that goes with this one. Did I say funny? I meant more sort of eerie.

Ahh here we are, the phone room. Yeeesss it did take a long time to get here. Oh yeeesss it is quite deep in the tower. Mmmm? The large lock on the door? Oh no, you don't need to worry about that, you will be quite safe...

***CRACK RUMBLE RUMBLE***

Hey wait a minute! Come back! Don't you want to use the phone now?

People these days, you try to help...

***sigh***

***

It is me, I'm back, sorry I could not resist, Halloween just brings the spooky-silly out in me! And this from a girl who can not watch anything horror at all!

Taking A Break And A Halloween Make

You know how sometimes you need to step away from a project to be able to see it properly? Well, I had one of those moments the other day, I thought I would step out for a bit of walk and maybe a coffee somewhere. Sometimes a bit of fresh air is just what you need for a creative refresh.

Of course it is always when I'm away from the computer that all those jobs I need to do on the computer suddenly jump to mind. Like setting up a blog post for Susana's Custom Art and Card Design, mmm a Halloween theme for a special one-off blog post from the DT and guests using a digi-stamp. Mmm what to do? What to do?

A Halloween tag using SCACD digi-stamp and a Halloween story

I was still throwing ideas around in my head when I found myself in front of a cafe. I'm quite new to this area so I'm often going for random walks to see what I can find. I must have been walking for a while because I wasn't really sure where I was, but the cafe looked nice, Cuckoos' Nest, cute name. Thinking that what I needed was a mocha and a bun I went in. Ooo, free Wifi - sorted!

It was only when I was sat in front of my drink and cake at the table in the back that I realised how busy the cafe was. Logging on to the free Wifi I started to feel a little uncomfortable. The place was busy alright but seemed really quiet. Ha, maybe they are all checking their emails on their phones or taking pictures of their cappuccinos. Yeah, that must be it.

Close up of the wire embellishment on A Halloween tag

I glanced up; everyone at that table seem to have their hands resting on the table and just seem to be starring at them. Mmm bit weird. Ooo, look a new picture from one of my favourite bloggers on Instagram. Hey it is a cherry Danish with a double mochaccino, LOL! That is exactly what I'm having! *heart*. Ooo yikes I better reply to that email.

I glance up again. That other table seems to be full of people just staring down at their hands on the table too. I look around. The whole cafe is staring at their hands. Even the barista at the counter. OK that is seriously weird.

But before I can think any more about it, a stream of children all dressed alike enter the cafe. Of course! It must be school chucking out time and this is where the parents wait for their kids.

Except one of the kids comes straight to my table. A chill runs down my spine as she sits in front of me without asking.

Close-up of the Halloween altered RockStar Eyes - Alex from SCACD

'I am Raven,' she says, 'you need to leave now'.

I'm somewhat taken aback. 'But I've not finished my cherry Danish,' I splutter absurdly.

'YOU need to leave NOW'. It is then that I realise that she hasn't opened her mouth to speak nor have her eyes left mine. I'm transfixed in her stare, I can just about manage to tear my eyes away to see that I am surrounded by the children, their eyes wide and unblinking. No, surely that can not be, their eyes seem to be glowing with a startling light.

My heart sinks and my feet feel like lead but the next thing I know I am standing as if a hand had pulled me out of my chair. I waver slightly but my legs move by their own accord and I find myself outside the cafe and in the street.

Another view of the SCACD Halloween Tag

As the children silently, unblinkingly, file out of the cafe, I have an urge to run and I do, Danish pastry in one hand, mobile phone in the other, I run as fast as I can muster. I run and I run until I reach the end of the street and I risk a look behind me.

The children are still watching me from outside the cafe, Raven at their lead. I don't want to chance it so I move off again but just as I do I notice some strange graffiti on the street sign. The name of the road has been scrubbed out and over an edge someone has written 'Midwich' in, is that blood? No surely not?

Another view of the SCACD Halloween Tag

Ahh Halloween is coming and I could not resist a scary story. None of it is true but you knew that didn't you? Didn't you? Mwahahah (evil laugh).

The role of Raven was played by
RockStar Eyes - Alex from SCACD pop on over to have a look at what she usually looks like untouched by Halloween magic! If you haven't guessed it already, the inspiration for my tall Halloween tale and the colouring of Alex is from John Wyndham's book The Midwich Cuckoos. I've also used my favourite stamp at the moment - the Susana Loves Stamps - Montage - Art of Chemistry which you can find either at SCACD.

If you hop on over to the SCACD blog you can find out how to win some gorgeous SCACD Digi-stamps and get your free Autumn digi to download now. *This Competition Is Now Over*

Have a good day my craftinators and sleep well tonight. Mwahaha (more evil laughter).

Sugar Skull Pumpkin For All Hallows' Eve

*Update - I've linked this up to Paint Party Friday, go and check them out if you aren't already on the party hop*

It has been a frightening week here on my blog with a visit to Dr Jekyll's lab on Tuesday and spooky pumpkins on Monday, then yesterday got really gruesome with oozing blood and everything. Yuck!

For All Hallows' Eve I thought I would merge a Mexican Day of the Dead tradition with an American Halloween tradition...

...and make a sugar skull-inspired carved pumpkin.

Two things I've never done before, curve pumpkins and paint them! It also gave me an excuse to try out pumpkin soup. Win win!

If you still want a spooking then don't forget to read about my recent visit to Dr Jekyll's lab.

Happy Halloween.

Ooozing Halloween

One day to go 'til All Hallows' Eve and the scary makes aren't finished here on my blog. So if you are of a nervous disposition then hop away now!

You of sturdy nervous, who don't jump at things that go bump in the night, welcome to Oozing Halloween...

You can find all the products I have used over at Creative Expressions. The blood splattered flower is from the Umount Winter Flowers stamp set. The oozing blood is made by dripping Lava Red Cosmic Shimmer Mister down the Creative Expressions Bark embossing folder textured book page panel.

The flower was coloured with a mix of pencils and Garden Cosmic Shimmer Drawing ink set and the black distressing was added with Ranger Archival Jet Black ink pad.

Hope I haven't scared you too much!

Have a fun Wednesday and don't forget to check out the Creative Expressions Facebook page and blog to find out all about the new design team members.

Oh and scroll down for yesterday's scary story and make! If you DARE!

Drink...If You Dare!

'Would you like a brew?' I turned around and saw Dr Jekyll holding a small green bottle in one hand and a glass in his other. 'Will you be having one?' I asked hopefully. 'No,' he snorted, 'it is a bit too early for me, but I can't let a visitor go without liquid refreshment,' and he smiled a lopsided grin that was more menacing than friendly.

He offered me the glass of acid green liquid. I thanked him and took it somewhat nervously. It felt warm to the touch and, wait... was there something moving...? I glanced up to find Dr Jekyll hovering over me with a wild, expectant look in his eye. 'Drink up,' he said, perhaps a little too eagerly, 'I brewed it myself...'

If you feel brave enough to find out how Dr Jekyll brewed his concoction then slope on over to the Clare Curd Craft blog.

But be warned...you do so at your own risk...

Oooooo Spoooooky Pumpkin!

I am the worse person when it comes to spooky horror movies, just can not watch them at all. Not a fan in the slightest, but when it comes to Halloween I do like joining in the witchy-fun! So I've got some posts coming up this week which might have a little Halloween-influences!

So get your spook-on for this spooky pumpkin tag I made at my Fiskars Demo on Saturday with the Fiskars Fuse Creativity System.

(I do use affiliate links on my blog and there are some in this blog post)

Fiskars Fuse Tag for Halloween

I've letterpressed the corrugated card using the Tag Thick Material Design Set then swiped it with a black ink pad and doodled the pumpkin and sentiment.

Hope to see you tomorrow for some more Halloween makes.

Spook-ya later!

La-La Land Crafts Inspiration Monday

Hey, Hey, Hey! We have another La-La Land Crafts Inspiration Monday and this week the inspiration is...Ooooo....Halloween.

Yeah, I've been having a bit of fun with the run up to Halloween here on my blog but how about something a bit more starry?

It is Flying Witch Marci again, you saw her here in green a few weeks ago when she was released.

I've used her with the Creepy Vines die this time.

The stars come with Flying Witch Marci and you can use a bit of mask stamping to make the starry background.

As always there is more inspiration on the La-La Land Crafts blog today and on Friday and you can link up your makes to the Customer Gallery too and perhaps win something cute too!

Yeah, I am looking forward to Halloween, you can tell can't you? It is an excuse to eat lots of sweets and have a Harry Potter film marathon in our household. Do you do anything?

Have a spooky Monday

Kim
