VIDEO: How to Layer Gelatos Tutorial PLUS 6 Ways With Gelatos

Techniques with Gelatos, how to layer and use, Video by Kim Dellow

I like using Faber-Castell Gelatos because they are so easy to use and quite versatile too, but they aren't the best at layering, well, they are if you want blended layers. But if you want distinct layers then I would not usually reach for Gelatos. If you find the same than I have a technique for you in this week's video that will overcome this issue and let you add as many Gelato layers without you want and without blending the layers all together.

So watch the video if you want to see how I do it and also to see the six different techniques I use to apply my Gelatos in just this one little mixed media canvas. You might also recognise the flower? As promised it is the digital download image that I colored with pencils in last week's video and if you want to see that video you can find it over on my YouTube channel with lots of tips on How to Color With Prismacolor Pencils. And the image is over in my Etsy shop ready for you to download and color along with three other flowers, this image is the Anemone flower digital stamp.

Working With Texture On Canvas

I started three canvases three weeks ago. I got all excited as I thought I would enter them into a couple of art competitions that I had spotted. I find having a focus like that can be a great way to concentrate the mind. I am somewhat deadline driven after all! But the best laid plans of Mice and Kims go so terribly squiggy at times and I missed both competition deadlines in spectacular form.

Textured canvas - tree study

I actually finished this piece a day after the deadline had passed. GO Kim! The other two pieces never got off the ground and are still sitting in a state of project beginning-ness. Mainly due to a convergence of commission deadlines, which always take priority.

All I knew when I started this piece was that I wanted to play with using gel medium to add a bit of dimension and texture to the work. I built the texture with Golden Regular gel and a palette knife then added layers of paint over the top once it was dry.

The tree came along nearer to the end. A few layers in, I realised that what I wanted was some sort of focal point and a tree felt right even if there is a lot a blue and not so much green. Although the Quinacridone Gold wash over the top does give it a slight green tinge in places and a slightly aged look that I don't think has been entirely captured in the photographs unfortunately.

I may have missed the competition deadline but I still like the resultant canvas with all its texture and it was a great learning process too.

Are you, like me, very deadline driven? Do you need a deadline to focus your mind? Or can you be productive without one?

Kim

Grace On Film

Hey guys, I have a mixed media canvas to show you today, I've called it 'Grace On Film'!

I was lucky enough to win some gorgeous Darkroom Door stamps as blog candy from Rachel Greig's Darkroom Door blog and just thought they would be perfect for this project. I love mixing fabric, paper, embroidery and rubber stamping and the different textures and effects it gives to a piece.

There are a lot of details, that I'm not sure I've managed to pick up in the photographs - still trying to get to know my new camera.

The fabrics have been hand coloured and stitched with beading detail. The Darkroom Door image has been hand tinted and I've also added crackle details to the sentiments and yummy buttons to my fabric roses.

Thanks for popping by.

Playing With Canvas

A mixed media make on canvas for you today and this one uses the inspirational Random Redhead challenge over at Gingersnaps Creations, which is all about the 'Botanical' this month.

One of my favourite stamps is reminiscent of an old botanical book illustration so I thought that it would be perfect for this challenge.

Thanks for popping by today.
Have a lovely crafty day.
Kim
