VIDEO: Stylised Paint Pen Feather Art Journal Page

What are your art journal themes at the moment? Have you got any themes, techniques, motifs that are featuring a lot at the moment? I've been drawing and painting a lot recently so drawing has been featuring in many of my art journal pages but I would definitely say that collage has been featuring a lot too, particularly in my backgrounds.  If you saw my DIY Patterned Paper Bird Page video in February then you will have seen one of my collage page work in action.

This time, for this video I'm using designer patterned paper to make my collage background and I am using the simplest of ways to add the paper to the background just to speed up the process! I've not done a voice over for this week's video, so sit back and enjoy the process to music and if you have any questions just ask in the comments below!

I think that one of the reasons that I like using patterned paper collage so much at the moment is that it is a great way to start a journal page and you if you want to you can get a journal page done really quickly with this method. In fact if I had not gone around the outside of the image with the paint I could have easily added this to my 5 Minute Create video series!

More Fun With Drawing With Ink Pads

Have you tried drawing with your ink pads yet? I have! I've been making some more art journal pages using ink pads since I posted the Drawing With Ink Pads Video last week. You can see I've gone very much for a nature theme to follow on from the stylised tulip a drew using ink pads in the video. Nature subjects seem to work well to this style of drawing.

I've been sticking with my bigger ink pads as I really like that you can't be too precise with the larger sizes. It is a little like using a large paint brush to define a form, you have to remain quite loose and try not to worry about the small details. And the texture you get just adds to the whole picture.

So here are a few more pictures drawn with ink pads.

For these drawings I used Fabriano Accademia paper and my colour palette was the Hero Arts Mid-Tone Ink Pads (Butter Bar, Orange Soda, Raspberry Jam, Stone Wash, Forever Green, Wet Cement) and the My Favorite Things Ink Pads (Sour Apple, Kraft).

New Projects With Old DIY Carved Stamps

I'm in the middle of a major craft room reorganisation and I've been going through my magazine collection and cutting out the articles I have written to archive them. I love magazines and am in awe at the amazing people who work hard to put them together, as you probably guessed if you visited my blog yesterday! When I last did a rough count of how many articles I have written it was over 320, so I think a re-sort is super long overdue!

It's a work in progress but during the re-sort I came across some stamps I carved for an article for Simply Cards and Papercraft issue 108 way back in 2012, although the magazine itself came out in 2013. I know! It is kind of making my eyes water just thinking about how long ago that was.

I don't even think you can get the magazine any more it was that long ago. But I thought it would be fun to ink up the stamps again and make a couple of new cards with them. What do you think? Have the designs aged well? They are pretty naive but I quite like that style.

I have used them for a couple of other projects one on my blog which was an art journal page and for a stamp carving tutorial over on the Blitsy blog, although I carved a new leaf for that project to the one I used in the magazine.

These stamps are made from Speedball Speedy Carve and Soft Cut Lino but I have also carved stamps into erasers before as well.

You know, this project revisit is making my want to do some new stamp carving! There is something really satisfying about carving your own stamp designs although I would not say I was that good at it. There are some truly phenomenal stamp carvers who share the work on instagram.

For instance I love the work of Viktoria Åström, her work is gorgeous and so detailed, you can see her on instagram or on her website. She often uses nature to inspire her work but her designs have so much character too, so do go check her out!

I quite like using double printing and that is how I made the chequered background. They are two different stamps, one I covered a square grid into and the other that I carved a line grid but you can layer them to make the chequered pattern.

The leaves are also a double print and if you pop over to my tutorial on the Blitsy blog you can see exactly how I made that print.

Another handy tip if you do use the Speedball Speedy Carve or erasers to carve into, they are thick enough to cover a stamp on both sides so two for the price of one. The Soft Cut Lino is much thinner, or at least the ones I have are, so you can only carve on one side.

VIDEO: Drawing With Ink Pads

Are you a stamper? Do you have ink pads? I would not quite call myself a stamper, although I have stamped a lot in the last few years, but I have still managed to collect quite a few ink pads! Wow, how useful these little tools are! You don't have to just use them for stamping do you? There are a whole range of different techniques you can use them for aren't there? But have you ever tried to draw with your ink pads?

Drawing with ink pads is a great way to make art! It is really expressive and the textures you can get just from pressing an ink pad to paper are wonderful. So for my video share today I thought I would walk you through some of the marks you can get and share a couple of art journal pages, made just using ink pads, to inspire you to look at your ink pads in a new light.

Another great thing about drawing with ink pads is that it is a really quick way to do some art, so I've added this technique to my 5 Minute Create series. The 5 Minutes Create video series is all about ideas for fitting art into even the tightest of schedules. But if you do find yourself with more than 5 minutes to create then these techniques are also great for doing as warm up exercises too. I only have a couple of videos in the series at the moment but I will be adding to them so keep your eyes out!

Using Pencils With Your Stencils

Today I am using pencils with my stencils again! Ok, that kind of rhymes doesn't it? Pencils with my stencils, it makes me think of bananas in pyjamas coming down the stairs for some reason! Any ho, moving rapidly on, I've not lost it, honest. Well, I might have lost it but how would I know?!

The pencils I am using with my stencils today are the Derwent Graphitints and a Stabilo All. Both these types of pencils are watersoluble and perfect for using with stencils.

My last pencils with stencil share was using them for a bit of stencil rubbing and if you want to see that go check my video showing the process on my YouTube channel. Did you see the project I then went on to make with the stencil rubbing? If you didn't you can catch up with the video of that project on YouTube too (or just scroll down to the blog post under this one!).

This time I'm using the pencils directly through the stencil and the stencil I am using is one of my own designs for PaperArtsy, the PS046 stencil. I'm working in one of my junk journals on a page that I've treated with a layer of gesso first. I started by scribbling through the stencil with the Graphitint pencils and then, after the pencil colour was down, I added some water to each of the colour areas with a waterbrush.

One of my favorite pencils is the Stabilo All and I used this last to add the dark background and flicked texture.

VIDEO: Stencil Rubbing Art Journal Project

Don't adjust your screen! You aren't having a weird déjà vu and you haven't suddenly realised that you are in the Matrix and seeing a repeat of the same thing! This is an entirely different blog post to the one about a month ago.

Well, ok, it isn't entirely different as it is the same project, but this time it comes with a MOVIE!

Let me explain. As I said, about a month ago I shared an art journal page of a big, old hot-coloured circle surrounded by drips and flicks, well that one pictured above in fact. But what I didn't tell you at the time was that I had filmed the making of the page. Unfortunately I just didn't have the time to process the film before I shared the page itself so this is a little of a belated process share. Even so, I hope you enjoy it! Better late than never, right?

Kraft Paper Abstract Art Journal Pages

I've always been a big fan of Kraft, I think it is one of my favourite papers. So I could not resist the Clairefontaine pad when I spotted it at Curtisward (you can find it on Amazon too). This pad is the same paper that you can buy in rolls to wrap packages with but it comes as 100 flat sheets glued along one short edge and perfect for some Kraft paper abstract art journal pages.

This paper is lightweight, around 90 gsm (41 lb) but as it is Kraft it is fibrous so quite resilient. It will take paints and mediums but you will get some buckling if you use too much, so if that bothers you then bear it in mind.

When I started in this pad I just could not stop so I've made quite a few Kraft paper abstracts!

I stuck to a simple colour palate and just a few products to make a cohesive collection of pages and played with some of the shapes and mark making that I've been enjoying playing with recently.

The thin black marks are from the Sakura Pigma Micron 0.5 pen and the thicker from the Sakura Pigma Brush pen. The lime green was FW Pearlescent acrylic ink and the pink was magenta acrylic paint from the Sennelier Abstract range. I also added some baking paper and flyer paper with Golden Regular gel or Liquitex clear gesso.

Hand Drawn Surface Pattern



Last month found me experimenting with pattern with this hand drawn repeat element. I did set down a pencil grid to help guide the pen work but I don't think the camera quite picks it up. VIDEO: Watercolour And Pen Project Walkthrough

Do you like blooms? I bit of an odd question I know! Ok, let me explain! I'm not talking about flowers but I'm talking about watercolour blooms, you know that jaggered edge texture you that can develop when two wet areas of watercolours meet? Some people don't like them but I really like the texture that they make and they are totally one of the fun features of using watercolours.

Recently, I've been playing about with them and today's video share is a project walkthrough where I've used this jaggered edge bloom property of watercolour paint to make a textured background for an drawing or an illustration.

The pen pattern is based on a recent Art Slice design I've been playing with. I've just used one element for this project and added in some character by changing the line thickness and adding in some texture in the centre.

Josef Frank Patterns-Furniture-Painting At The Fashion And Textile Museum London

Have you been to any art exhibitions that you have really loved lately? A couple of weekends ago I went to the Josef Frank Patterns-Furniture-Painting Exhibition at The Fashion And Textile Museum London and loved it.

Frank is widely thought of as one of the founding voices behind the Swedish Modernist aesthetic and you can totally see why at the exhibition. This exhibition showcases some of Frank's iconic fabric designs during his time working with Estrid Ericson at Svenskt Tenn and also his lesser known watercolour artwork too.

It's full of his wonderful large motif designs and gorgeous use of colour, which although some of the pieces are other 70 years old they still look fresh and inline with today's trend.

One of my favourite things about this exhibition was that some of the fabric patterns were along side the original artwork and I loved seeing his annotations and colour scheme swatches as he worked out the basic pattern repeat.

A lot of his work was inspired by nature and had floral themes but there were a couple of his non-nature inspired work in the exhibition too like this pattern based on the Manhattan map.

Another thing I loved was his layering of colours in some of the pieces it added a lot of depth and interest.  Like in this Vegetable Tree piece, where he had given the tree and fruit a three dimensional appearance with the layering of block colours and some dot texture. Just so clever, the work looks naive but it is actually quite complex.

I've just shared some of his textile work from the exhibition. There was also a collection of his watercolours which were interesting to see too upstairs as well as a small collection of designs from 21st Century Swedish textiles designers.

It is definitely worth going to see if you are a in London or planning a trip to London before the 7th May, when it finishes.

If you are coming to London by train anyway then it is a good deal and you just need to fill out a form online and print it off or pick one up at your local station. Turn Your Art Into Patterns

Do you ever turn your work into pattern? It is something I have been playing with on and off for a while now. I think it is a fabulous way to extend the life of your artwork and create something new from the work you have already done. Do you remember the Art Journal page cushions I made way back in January 2016 with Snapfish? Well it is a similar thing but this time I've been playing with making repeat patterns using my art.

And I thought it would be fun to share some of the results of this pattern work and challenge you to have a go with your art too, if you aren't already. Perfect timing as the weekend is upon us so what is stopping you?!

For my repeat pattern share today I've used the same large cheese plant leaf that I used in my 5 Minute Journal - Quick Cut Outs video from a couple of weeks ago using some of the DIY Patterned Papers I've been working with recently.

I added another leaf using the same papers as well as some cheese plant flower shapes too and scanned all the cut outs so that I could manipulate them into a digital repeat pattern using Photoshop Elements.

And I'm sure you already know that once you have your pattern you can always upload it to one of the print on demand outlets like Society6 or Spoonflower, (there are lots of others too) so even earn a little cash from your designs or get them made into your own bespoke soft furnishings if you like!

Here is my pattern first in it's original colour then underneath that I've changed the colours to match the Pantone colour of the Year - Greenery - to see how it would look.

Which do you prefer?

Last weekend we went to the Josef Frank exhibition at the Fashion and Textile Museum in Bermondsey, London, which was pretty amazing and full of colour. I think this pattern is inspired by Josef Frank's large floral motif designs.

I used the mock-up facility on Society6 to see how the pattern would look on products. It definitely gives it a new lease on life don't you think?

So my challenge/ inspiration to get you creating this weekend/ week is to make a repeat pattern!

VIDEO: Try This Easy Masking Technique In Your Art Journal!

As promised here is this week's video inspiration and just in time to get you up and running for a creative weekend! This week I'm sharing one of my favourite techniques which is a really easy masking technique using paper masks. Paper masks are wonderful, they are so simple and you can use them for so many things. Today I am using them to make an abstract page in my junk art journal using acrylic paints and paint pens.

I've gone for an abstract page but you can easily use this technique for a whole range of styles and looks. I've kept my shapes loose and rough and didn't over think what they should look like or where they should be placed. Sometimes it is just good to go with the flow isn't it?

YouTube! Love It Or Hate It?

I have a question for you - are you a big YouTube fan or do you find it a pain? Love it or hate it you can't deny that it is a real game changer for us creative types isn't it? It is an amazing resource for learning about new products or techniques and for those of us that create video as well it is a good way to build and reach out to our community.

But speaking now as both a YouTube watcher and a video maker I do find it really hard to find the great videos. I mean you can spend hours bumping from video to video trying to find something that actually helps, or entertains, or is just enjoyable to watch can't you?

Gouache Paint And Ink Spring Leaves And Buds

It may be a new week but I am still on a Spring inspired theme here on my blog! But as Spring is just starting to be Sprung (!) you can't really blame me can you? So my inspiration share this Monday to get you Springing into creative action for this new week is actually linked to the project I shared on Friday, did you see it? Today I'm sharing a pair of pieces, one with a Spring Leaves motif and the other with some Stylised Spring Buds.

I had so much fun with the Kuretake Sumi ink and dip pen on a Turner Gouache painted surface for my project share on Friday that I used them again for these pieces. These projects are a bit of play, practice and experimenting.

I used a lot of colour for the first piece, for the second piece I went for more of a pastel look. I'm not sure which look I prefer. How about you? Do you have a preference?
