New Projects With Old DIY Carved Stamps

I'm in the middle of a major craft room reorganisation and I've been going through my magazine collection and cutting out the articles I have written to archive them. I love magazines and am in awe at the amazing people who work hard to put them together, as you probably guessed if you visited my blog yesterday! When I last did a rough count of how many articles I have written it was over 320, so I think a re-sort is super long overdue!

It's a work in progress but during the re-sort I came across some stamps I carved for an article for Simply Cards and Papercraft issue 108 way back in 2012, although the magazine itself came out in 2013. I know! It is kind of making my eyes water just thinking about how long ago that was.

I don't even think you can get the magazine any more it was that long ago. But I thought it would be fun to ink up the stamps again and make a couple of new cards with them. What do you think? Have the designs aged well? They are pretty naive but I quite like that style.

I have used them for a couple of other projects one on my blog which was an art journal page and for a stamp carving tutorial over on the Blitsy blog, although I carved a new leaf for that project to the one I used in the magazine.

These stamps are made from Speedball Speedy Carve and Soft Cut Lino but I have also carved stamps into erasers before as well.

You know, this project revisit is making my want to do some new stamp carving! There is something really satisfying about carving your own stamp designs although I would not say I was that good at it. There are some truly phenomenal stamp carvers who share the work on instagram.

For instance I love the work of Viktoria Åström, her work is gorgeous and so detailed, you can see her on instagram or on her website. She often uses nature to inspire her work but her designs have so much character too, so do go check her out!

I quite like using double printing and that is how I made the chequered background. They are two different stamps, one I covered a square grid into and the other that I carved a line grid but you can layer them to make the chequered pattern.

The leaves are also a double print and if you pop over to my tutorial on the Blitsy blog you can see exactly how I made that print.

Another handy tip if you do use the Speedball Speedy Carve or erasers to carve into, they are thick enough to cover a stamp on both sides so two for the price of one. The Soft Cut Lino is much thinner, or at least the ones I have are, so you can only carve on one side.

So how about you? Do you carve your own stamps? What was the last design you carved? What do you use? Or do you have a favourite stamp carving artists?

Ever Wondered Who Designs The Free Gifts On Your Favourite Craft Magazines?

I am really lucky as I often get to play with the free gifts that come with magazine titles such as Die-cutting Essentials, Papercraft Essentials, Simply Cards & Papercraft and Creative Stamping several weeks before they hit the shelves. It is one of the perks of being a craft designer for the magazines, but who is it that designs these amazing products and how do they do it?

Well, if you have ever wondered that and you want to know a little bit more about what it is like to do that job then today is your lucky day as Craft Stash have an interview with their in-house designers Kay Whittaker and Vicky Welsby. Kay and Vicky both design the Apple Blossom, Pretty Quick, Creative Dies and Fuzzy Lemon ranges as well as many of the covermounts that come with our magazines.

It is a great opportunity to learn a lot more about them as often in-house designers live in the shadows working away behind the scenes to bring us great ideas and beautiful designs but we don't get to meet them. Both Kay and Vicky have been sharing their designs via their own instagram feeds too, Kay Whittaker and Vicky Welsby Design, so go follow them there as well and say 'Hi'! It is lovely to see the people behind the designs isn't it?

Oh and whilst you are over at CraftStash you might want to make use of their amazing 3 for £10 offer on a selection of their dies and stamps! But you will need to be quick as I think it ends at midnight (BST) today 20th April 2017! Use the code: PICKMIX310 at checkout.

Cards For Tech-Heads!

If you know someone who is into their technology and you need some card ideas for them then you might want to get your hands on the current issue of Simply Cards and Papercraft (issue 156).

Kim Dellow's Technology makes for Simply Cards and Papercraft issue 156

I've got a whole article brimming with different ideas for cards and a gift, covering different occasions, and all based around technology, you know - mobile phones, gaming, laptops the lot. Being a bit of a tech-head and gamer myself it was fun to come up with some techie-themed makes for this issue.

Also with this issue of Simply Cards and Papercraft is a really pretty embossing folder free gift with matching dies and stamps that I am really looking forward to playing with when I get the chance. Have you seen it yet? Lovely. Every year I keep my eye out for new snowflake stamps and dies as they are so handy to have in the stash.

Free gift with Simply Cards and Papercraft issue 156

I might use these on the Christmas card commissions I still have left to make. There are also some lovely Christmas stamps that came with some recent issues of Creative Stamping that I might use too. I can't quite believe that we are so near to Christmas! I've been making Christmas commission projects since May so now we are only, what, five or six weeks from the day itself, I can't get my head around that there isn't much time left to finish this year's cards!

Zoinks! I better get on with it. Good luck if you are in the same boat as me!

Catch you later.

PUBLISHED: Simply Cards And Papercraft 153 Ken Oliver Color Burst Masterclass

Hey guys, I have a heads-up for you today! This month in Simply Cards and Papercraft, issue 153, I have a masterclass all about the Ken Oliver Color Burst water-soluble powdered pigments.

I know, right?! This is my third blog post about water-soluble powdered pigments this week! What with my new video on PaperArtsy Infusions and my Blitsy tutorial this week being all about the Prima Marketing mica and artisan powders it has gone kind of crazy hasn't it?

I mean I could not have planned it better, how is that for timing! I didn't plan it, honest! It is a coincident, it is work I've been doing on and off for the last few months all coming together in one big powdered pigment explosion this week! [Thinks to self - perhaps I should not have mentioned that and then it will look like I'm some blog post scheduling, organised genius?! Man! Did I just write that out loud? Ahh, no one will notice!]

La La La. Nothing to see here, just go about your normal business...and feast your eyes on these lovely pics:

[I do use affiliate links and there are some in this blog post.]

Kim Dellow's Color Burst card from Simply Cards and Papercraft 153 Reds

Beautiful pictures from the Practical Publishing International team as always! In the article I've got some step by steps for a whole range a techniques using Color Burst, which is also perfect timing as the current subscription gift for Simply Cards and Papercraft is a set of your very own Color Burst in the yummy Caribbean colours I've been using. I love brights and jewel colours!

I don't know, if you have been wondering about getting a subscription and/ or wondering about the Ken Oliver Color Burst then it might be the perfect time to do it!

Right, I better go in case any more coincidences or perfectly timed items turn up! Don't want anyone to think my life is in any way coordinated or anything! :)

Have a super creative Saturday.
