Art It Friday - Show Your Face

Hey, hey, hey Facers! We are here again, another Friday Portrait share for the week and I've got a fun one for you today (well, I think it is fun, whether you do or not is, well, up to you!).

Before we get going, let's do the admin stuff:

1. August Is Show Your Face Inspired By {Insert Name}.
Next week is the first Friday of August and anyone who wants to join in the Show Your Face Inspired By {Insert Name} can do. All the info you need is in my Show Your Face blog post from 10th July. Briefly, it is to make some face art inspired by one (or more if you like) of the other sharers from our #ShowYourFace community.

It is optional, you don't have to do an 'inspired by' face but it is a great way to stretch ourselves, don't you think? So do have a go at least once in August if not the whole of August! But if you don't want to play, then just carry on as normal Show Your Face.

2. Blog Button
We have a blog button now! Woop! Woop! Anyone who wants to wear it on their blog with pride can grab the HTML code from below the blog button here:

To Install It:
On Wordpress.com:

• Select all the grab code in the box below the button image above and copy. 
• Go to your WP-admin and in the dashboard click 'Appearance' then 'widgets' from the drop-down menu.
• Find the 'Text' widget in the 'Available Widget' list and drag it up to 'Main Sidebar' area or whichever area you want to place it. 
• Paste the Grab code for the blog button into the body of the text widget box, give it a title if you want (optional), and press 'save'.

I'm assuming it is similar if you are using a self-hosted wordpress (wordpress.org) but I don't have a self-hosted version so can't check. Please let me know if it is different!


On Blogger:

• Select all the grab code in the box below the button image above and copy. 
• Go to the design area of your Blogger blog and select 'Layout'. 
• Choose 'Add A Gadget' in the Sidebar section or whichever section you want to place it, then pick 'HTML/JavaScript' from the pop-up Gadget list. 
• Paste the Grab code for the blog button into the 'Content' area of the gadget, give it a title if you want (optional), and press 'Save'

Yay! Blog Button! On blog! Hopefully!

Admin Over – Let's Get On With The Share!

Really I should have done a quick share this week as the post is quickly turning into a bit of a mountain. But true to Kimberley (that's me btw) form, I've decided to share a process blog post today for a bit of fun.

I shall try to keep it quick – feel free to ask any questions if any bit is unclear.

My face share this week looks far more complex than it actually is.

It is a paper collage selfie made up from bits of patterned paper and it is super simple to do and surprisingly, or at least for me, still resembles the original model, which as it was a selfie was in fact me.

If you want to have a go at this you will need:
A photo of a face
Photo-editing software like Photoshop Elements or similar (I'm guessing that the free online photo-editing software PicMonkey can do this too but I've not had a go yet.)
Tracing paper
Pencil
Scissors
Craft knife, I used a swivel knife
Cutting board
Patterned paper
Glue


Step 1 - Open Your Head Shot

Open up your head shot. It doesn't have to be perfect, obviously you are perfect, but the photo doesn't have to be!


Step 2 - Change The Colour

Change the colour of the photo according to the light and shade areas. You can do this different ways and it depends on the software you are using. I did it in Photoshop Elements by first making a copy layer of the photograph then using the Hard Mix option from the drop-down menu in the layers palette.

(I am totally happy to walk you through this if you are lost, so do shout if I'm being too jargony!).


Step 3 - Trace The Face

You can print out your photograph or if you are impatient, like me, take a soft pencil and just trace the image directly from the screen (assuming you don't have a touchscreen computer that is!). DON'T PRESS HARD! You don't want to mess up your screen do you? Now, using the stylised photograph from Step 2 as reference, pick out the papers you want to use for each layer.

I decided to used red where there were black tones and teal for the red, yellow and white areas of the photograph but you can go with whatever you want, I mean that is the fun part, right?


Step 4 - Transfer Each Layer

So switch off your head from seeing an image of a face and start thinking pattern and layers – the colours from the stylised picture in Step 2 should help, or if you are using a black and white photo then the gradients of grey will help.

Transfer the traced image onto the back of your paper but only the important parts for the paper, So for the red paper, which was representing the black area of the photo in Step 2, I just did the outline of the head and the pupils of the eyes. For the dark teal paper, which was representing the red areas in the photo, I just transferred the outline of the face and the shadow under the nose, under the cheekbone and the lips.

Continue until you have each layer transferred to the back of the patterned paper.


Step 5 - Cut It Out

Cut out the pieces and start building them up into the picture. There will be some small bits so if you think you might lose them then put them into a spare envelope as you work. It does not have to be super accurate.


Step 6 - Jigsaw Puzzle Time!

Remember the tracing paper from Step 3? Well it makes the perfect map to help you glue your cut-out paper pieces in the correct places. Layer the tracing paper over the top and flip it on and off as you place the cut-out pieces.


There you have it, a patterned paper collage selfie and my Show Your Face share this week.

Hey, put it in a frame and it would make a fun version of your family portraits for your home, wouldn't it? Right, I'm off to do one of David to put on our Kitchen Gallery wall we are slowly adding to!

After the fun I had with scribbles last week I had originally thought I would do another scribble face for my share this week. But what actually came into being was this lady.

She isn't quite scribbles more like long strokes of a pen with a bit of scribble.

Art It Friday - Show Your Face

Hey Facers! Don't go rushing to the bottom to link up your face just yet - I've had an idea!

I thought it might be fun to try something new for August, but I wanted to give you an early heads-up so that you can get your noodles thinking about it now.

During August Art It Friday - Show Your Face will become Show Your Face Inspired By {Insert Name}. 

For the month of August, that is four Fridays, pick someone from the Show Your Face linky to inspire one of your face shares for that week. It can be any aspect of their portrait work like how they construct their face, the materials they use, how they use colour or even how they use other elements like words or 3D objects, whatever you like. Just make sure you name them with a link to their blog (or social media gallery) in your blog post (or social media write up if you are using a gallery) and share what you were inspired by in their work.

So what is the point to Show Your Face Inspired By {Insert Name}?

The aims are to:

• Give us a little kick out of our comfort zones
• Try something new
• Surprise ourselves!
• Extend our technique / style toolboxes
• Share some bloggy/ social media/ gallery love! 
• Oh and have fun of course!

Rules?
Just as with the normal Show Your Face there are no rules other than the work needs to be yours! Try using a different person from the linky to inspire your work each week. It can be anyone from all the links we have shared since the start. Make sure you name them and link to them and as always please link back to the link blog post here on my blog for that week.

It is optional! If you don't want to take part, and you just want to do normal Show Your Face feel free, you can still link up your work, inspired by other linkers or not, through the August weeks.

Remember this will run in August, so you don't have to do it now and I will keep reminding you through July, but when you hop around the blogs remember to make a note of anything that jumps out at you that you want to try in August.

I'm calling this style scribble face! She was scribbled in pen directly, I didn't use any pencil guidelines I just went for it. It was a bit scary! But I will definitely try it again. Just wish I could get the feature perspective on a turned face right. Practise, Practise!

I will kick off this week's share with a shout out to Julie Ann Lee from Magpie Heaven. A couple of weeks or so ago I shared a little face drawing warm-up exercise with the doodling different faces in lots of boxes of colour on your page. Do you remember?

Well Julie Ann took that exercise, ran with it and made it entirely her own with this fabulous art that she shared with us on the 19th June 2015.

Right, on with this week and here is my piece. This is a pencil sketch I actually made back in April.

I liked her so much that I then went on to use her as the basis of this watercolour that I shared with you for the 24th April's Show Your Face. But I never actually showed the sketch that lead to her.

This week I'm back to doodling again. I'm having a major clear up of my workspace and I just grabbed what I had to hand, an old monoprint and a white ink dropper.

'Ok,' I thought, 'let's see if I can make some faces with that. Yeah pretty doodly! But hey still fun.

That brings me neatly to my Show Your Face share for this week. I'm watching the chapter on Mass, Proportion and Features, which is lesson 2 in the course, and it breaks down the facial features into easy shapes, so that is what I've been practising this week.

I think I'm finding the nose the hardest to do, but eyes are fun to do aren't they? Practise, Practise, Practise!

As is now tradition I will kick off this week's face sharing with something I tried this week. It's a quick and fun exercise that you might like to try too. I gave myself the challenge to doodle a selection of faces, the only rule was to make each one different from the ones before.

I took a page in my art journal and used small watercolour washes to section off the page. Then I grabbed some ballpoint pens of all colours and doodled away.

It is amazing how it doesn't take many lines to form a recognisable face does it?

If you fancy having a go at this little challenge to yourself then go ahead and let me know how it goes! I would love to see.

This would make a great warm up exercise don't you think? I shall definitely being do more of these, I can already see a couple of faces that I might work up into bigger studies for fun.

I shall kick off the share this week with a work in progress, it is an unfinished journaling page using acrylic and watercolours.

But the face was done as a sketch with pencil on Layout Paper.

Layout paper is great, it isn't quite tissue paper and it isn't quite copy paper but somewhere in between. It is an artist quality thin paper, 45 gsm (31 lb), mostly designed to use with layering up ideas and working out layouts, hence the name.

I love it as for its wonderful semi-transparent quality and if you layer it on strips of book page for example you get the book page just about showing through.

I've got as far as sticking her to the painted background but I just wasn't feeling it, do you know what I mean? So she has gone into the work in progress pile until more inspiration strikes.

Your face can be drawn, doodled, painted, stitched, be made using any materials and can be any style, all I ask is that it is your artwork. If you use templates, stencils or stamps to build the face anatomy then they should be ones you have made yourself and not someone else's. 

Finished pieces or works in progress are all welcome so come join in and spread the word on your blog/ social media outlets.

Ok this really is a practice piece that I'm sharing today and if it puts you in mind of the work of Pam Carriker there might be a reason for that!

With my new found face-drawing obsession I felt I needed a bit of guidance so I bought Pam Carriker's Mixed Media Portraits book* and I followed one of the tutorials which lead to this somewhat skewed version of a Pam Carriker head.

Obviously it is nowhere near as good as one of her works, however, doing it did teach me a lot. I think the book will help my shading practice, which is one of my weak points, so it was a useful exercise. But I can't help feeling a bit weirded out by the fact it feels more like someone else's style than my own, not that I know what my style is yet but I'm working on it. But we all have to start somewhere don't we?

Art It Friday - Show Your Face

Welcome Facers, are you ready to show your portrait work this week? I certainly hope so! We got an amazing range of faces last week do go take a look if you haven't had a chance yet.

If you are new here I've gone a bit face art-crazy recently and am running a community share all about faces! The idea is to inspire, be inspired and to share our portrait progress week by week.

So if you have drawn, doodled, painted, sewn a face or done any portrait work at all then link it up below. It can be any style and use any materials but it needs to be your own work and not using stamps or stencils to make the face, unless you designed those stamps and stencils yourself that is!

You can link up old work too, that is no problem so just go ahead and link up then spread the word and we will see if we can get everyone making faces (pun intended!).

Ok that is enough of that, let me share with you my face this week.

This week I went back to pencil and practised some whimsical faces. Just a bit of doodling.

Then the doodling got a bit more serious as I tried to practise shading whilst watching the BBC production of the Other Anne Boleyn girl. It is supposed to be Jodhi May, luckily I wasn't practising getting likeness!

Then back to some random face doodling and shading practise.

That was my week of portrait work, well when I say week I really mean Wednesday!
