Learn How To Draw And Paint Mixed Media Faces

You all know that I'm pretty much obsessed with drawing and painting faces don't you? If you are a regular to my blog then you can't have helped but notice the weekly community art share link up that I host called Show Your Face. Well if you are fan too of drawing and painting faces on your mixed media projects and in your art journal then you are going to love this new Creating Faces video from the people who bring you Craft Stamper Magazine.

Trish Latimer, editor of Craft Stamper, along with three other designers Tracy Scott, Clare Lloyd and Kim Dellow (Hold on! That is ME!) are sharing how they create their mixed media faces in 'Creating Faces' the video, coming to a DVD player, Bluray player or the Traplet online streaming/ download site NOW!

Creating Faces Video showing how to add faces to your mixed media work

Ok so I might be getting a bit excited, I could hear that deep film announcer guy's voice in my head just now (could you hear him too or was that just me?).

Anyway, I AM pretty excited because, well 1. I'm one of the designers sharing how I make one of my illustrative faces and 2. I've seen all the videos and they are pretty fab! Each designer shares all their tips and tricks and you get to see the whole process in real time.

If you are new to face drawing and painting each designer goes through all the steps they take from start to finish so it is a great place to start. If you are further along with your own face art there are plenty of techniques and tips to add your mixed media toolbox and adapt to your own practice.

Back cover of the Creating Faces video

Creating Faces is available in a choice of formats: £14.95 Bluray, £12.95 DVD £2.50 single download or £8.95 for all four downloads and you can find the Bluray and DVD in the Traplet shop and the downloads on the Traplet streaming/ download page.

But you might want to get yourself along to the Craft Stamper Facebook page as they are doing a GIVEAWAY!

Hope you enjoy watching it as much as we enjoyed putting it together.

Kim

Show Your Face - Focus On Eyes

Hey Facers, welcome to Show Your Face our weekly community face art share. Although this is not a challenge blog and you are free to post any type and style of face you have been making, we do run a prompt every other month for people to use, if they so wish. We are on the last week of our Focus On Eyes prompt and thanks again to Susana Magenheimer for suggesting it. Hope you have been having fun with it.

We have had some wonderful prompt suggestions recently and when I get a moment I will update our schedule with them, so keep your eyes peeled - see what I did there? Focus on eyes? Get it?

Erm anyway...

First up the admin...

Schedule:
  • Focus On Eyes - January 2016 (break out of our normal practice and try different styles of doing eyes such as traditional, cartoon, manga etc. As suggested by Susana Magenheimer)
  • Inspired By - March 2016 (pick fellow Facers to inspire our work this month)
Feel free to let me know if you have any more themes or ideas for Show Your Face.

Don't forget:
  • Show Your Face is a community link up for portrait work in any style or medium.
  • the aims are to share, learn, practise, inspire, and be inspired.
  • to make sure that the face artwork is yours, if you use any stamps or templates to build the face they should be designed by you.
  • the link is open from 10 am (BST) every Friday and stays open for a week, so link away.
  • finished pieces, works in progress or retro posts (i.e. older works, not from this week) are all welcome.
  • to link back to the link blog post here for that week.
  • Spread the word on your blog/social media outlets and use the #ShowYourFaceFriday hashtag in social media.
  • There is a prompt every other month. Using the prompts is totally optional and just there if you fancy playing along. You can still post your face work even if you haven't used the prompt.

My Share This Week...

This week I've used our Focus On Eyes theme as an excuse to try a Manga-style face. It is something I've wanted to try for ages but have not had the courage to give it a go! So I thought this would be a good kick out of my comfort zone and a great way to try it out. He/She (I haven't quite decided which!) is a pencil sketch.

My Share This Week...

In last week's Show Your Face I used the theme to have a look at the eyes I've been drawing, I did a kind of eye 'stock-take' as I called it! Having done that I could see where my comfort zone was when I draw eyes, so this week I tried to break out of my comfort zone a little and tried these HUGE stylised eyes. She is done using Prismacolor pencils.

My Share This Week...

I thought I would take the opportunity to do an eye 'stock-take' for my first post this month! So I've gathered together some of my eyes from 2015 Show Your Face Shares to see what my style is or how it is developing at the moment. There is definitely a similarity coming through with my eye style so it is going to be fun trying out different things this month and seeing how that affects my practice.

My Last Face for 2015...

I went for paint to make my face this week. She is made using a very simple palette of gold, raw umber and white. The base was a junk journal page that had the cleanings from a stencil with molding paste from a previous work.

I love the texture and I altered how I used the paint, so I added it thickly in places or used it in a wash in other areas.

You can see the shine of the gold paint when it catches the light.

A face looking off to the side

Another face emerging from my junk art journal this week. She is done in ballpoint pen, Derwent Graphik line marker, gesso and Pigment Izink. I think the splotches partially obscuring her face are acrylic paint but I can't remember, they must have been done a while ago now!

My Share This Week...

A winter-themed face made with paint and Micron pen

My share this week is a mish-mash! This week I've worked on a dumping page in my junk journal that is what I call the pages that I clean off stencils or other tools on. So before I had even started there was a bit of texture and the snowflakes on there from previous projects.

When I was flicking through my journal trying to get inspiration for this week's face this page popped out and so did this face. She is drawn with a Sakura Pigma marker and painted with a mix of PaperArtsy paints and Distress Paints as well as some of the Derwent Graphik line markers too.

Close-up on A winter-themed face

I think the snowflake hair looks a little like one of those floral swimming hats from the 50/60's. Is that just me?

My Share This Week...

Show Your Face In The Style Of Leonor Fini

My share this week is probably the best know of the artists inspiring my work this month. She has here own dedicated website for a start! It is nice to not have to link to Wikipedia for a change! So my In The Style Of person this week is Leonor Fini who had a long and diverse career from being a practically self-taught artist. I just love her watercolour and gouache faces and the suggestion of form with the movement of the water on the page.

As with my other 'In The Style Of' work this month I started by trying to mimic one of her faces to try to deconstruct how her art works and that is what you can see in the picture above. Then I've tried to pull the techniques into one of my own faces, see the picture below. Obviously I have a long way to go and lots to learn to get to a point where I am confident with this technique but I just love watercolour faces so I shall work on it and we shall see where it gets me!

Show Your Face In The Style Of Leonor Fini my take

Today's shares were done with a waterbrush and a Stabilo All pencil.

My Share This Week...

Show Your Face In The Style Of Bridget Bate Tichenor

I'm still enjoying discovering artists that are new to me and today I'm 'In The Style Of' another surrealist Bridget Bate Tichenor. Her faces are wonderfully expressive and, to me, a little creepy too. I tried three of her faces in my art journal and then blocked out the negative space with gesso. I'm actually drawing in ball point pen, biro, a lot at the moment so these guys were all done with a ballpoint pen.

Lovely Facers,  it's time to Show Your Face! As it is November we do have a theme and it is 'In The Style Of' where we can incorporate the work/ style/ technique/ materials of an established artist. But you are free to use the theme or not use it and free to interpret it differently if you wish, so just have a play!

Before we get started I just want to say how sorry I am that I'm not getting around everyone's blogs at the moment. November is proving to be very busy here at Kimberley Studios! I am really missing seeing your work in more details but I am loving the thumbnails that show up and I am extremely grateful that you are journeying with me in this face journey, I hope that you are enjoying it!

I hope that you will forgive me and that I get some time to do some catching up!

My Share This Week...

Show Your Face In The Style Of Toyen (Marie Čermínová)

So I am really enjoying finding out about female artist which, like I said last week, is how I decided to interpret our Show Your Face theme. It is a great excuse to find out more about them. My share this week is in the style of Toyen (aka Marie ÄŒermínová 1902 - 1980) who was part of the surrealist movement according to the regrettably small biography about her on Wikipedia.

Her style seems to be very much around line work which is something I've found I enjoy doing as well. My Toyen-style face is drawn in ball point pen on a painted art journal page. Then I've added some gesso and dripping to help her to stand out from the page.

If you are interested in women surrealists you can find a handy list on Wikipedia and also here are some curated together on Flavorwire.

Show Your Face In The Style Of Marie Laurencin

Welcome to November Facers and time for a theme for anyone who fancies stretching their portrait practice a bit. The theme is 'In The Style Of' and the idea is that you incorporate the work/ style/ technique/ materials of an established artist.

The theme is lose and totally up to you how you interpret it. The main reason for the theme is to prompt us all to step outside our comfort zone a little and stretch our own practice so that we can add tools, learning, ideas to our everyday work.

As with all the themes it is totally optional, you can do it once in the month, every week in the month or not at all and just link up your usual work. There is no whip and it is all a bit of fun so run with it, don't run with it, it is up to you! Just enjoy, have fun and hopefully learn and grow.

If you do join in please tell us who your inspiration is and add a link to the artist themselves or a website about them so we can all get to know them - thanks.

My Share This Week...

I am ashamed to admit that I know very little about artists and the history of art, I never learnt it at school and past school I was too busy studying science to fit in art in any great depth. Don't get me wrong I love visiting galleries and learning about art, I'm not a complete cultural void but I've never really had the chance to study artists and art in a big way. So that is what I am doing with our theme this month.

I thought I would take the opportunity to really focus in on some artists' work and I'm going to focus in on female artists because, let's face it, they are massively under-represented in formal art education/ galleries/ museums. If I thought I knew little about art in general I know even less about female artists and that just won't do.

Kim Dellow In The Style of Marie Laurencin

So this week I'm In The Style Of Marie Laurencin (1883-1956), if you google (other search engines are available!) her work you will see that she has some glorious portrait styles, just stunning. Don't be deceived by how simple it looks it is far from it. There are some really subtle shading that gives her portraits so much depth and expression. My work comes nowhere near capturing this subtlety but it is great fun to explore and fun to try.

I've used a canvas board that already had a background including some 3D stencil work that I incorporated into the face to add some texture.

If you are interested in discovering female artists I found a couple of lists on Wikipedia that you might be interested in: a list of 20th Century Female Artists and this potted history of women artists.

It's ok, it is only me, getting into the Halloween spirit! It's Show Your Face as normal but my share this week has a spooky twist.

Before we get started don't forget that next week it is November so we have a theme/ prompt - In The Style Of  - November 2015 (examine our favourite established artists, incorporate what they do through our own face practise) for anyone who wants to have an excuse to try something different. Totally optional, you don't have to use the theme or you can push your boundaries and give it a go, up to you.

Also the social media hashtag has evolved to #ShowYourFaceFriday thanks to the guys on Instagram for making great use of it and owning it!

A study of light and shade in a face

Scary? Not scary? What do you think? I didn't set out to make a scary face this week, I was just looking at the negative space on a very shaded face with a light source above and to the front. I like the added texture of the watercolour pooled in the brush strokes of the gel medium that I used to stick the book pages down.
