Show Your Face

Hey Facers, September is here which means no more 'Show Your Face Inspired By' and back to the regular 'Show Your Face'. Wahoo!

Before we rush on I would really like you to take a minute to think about what you got out of it 'Show Your Face Inspired By'. If you didn't get a chance to join in then don't worry, think about what you get from looking at other Facers' artwork in general.

What I Got From Show Your Face Inspired By
Here is my share of what I got from it. For me I found that 'Show Your Face Inspired By' really made me think about my process and style through trying to examine and include other people's style and processes into my work. It also gave me an added appreciation of how amazing you all are and how talented you are. You guys ROCK! Seriously!

I also loved watching people join in and connect up to fellow Facers. Ok, I will let you into a little secret I had another reason for insisting that you link up to the fellow Facer you where inspired by other than it is the right thing to do and a nice thing to do too! You may or may not be aware of this but linking to each other blogs is a great way of adding authenticity and visibility to all of our blogs in the eyes of the search engines.

It is more of a blogging technical reason and might not be of interest to some of you but I kind of hope that it helps all our blog without us realising. I'm not saying go mad and fill your blog posts with links out but every now and then it can't hurt now can it and, as I said before, it is both the right thing to do and a nice thing to do, blogging is a community after all!

Facers Needs Your Input!
I would like to run 'Show Your Face Inspired By' again in the next few months, but this is a community group and if you all hated it then I won't run it! Majority rule!

I was also thinking of running other occasional, month long, optional join in, prompts like 'In The Style Of' where we take a month to examine our favourite artists and try and incorporate or examine what they do through our own face practise. Or maybe a month focusing on how to do eyes, or noses or anatomy, or stylised faces. There is a lot we could cover!

The idea is to take us out of our comfort zone, make us re-examine our own work and hopefully push some of our boundaries as this is often when we learn and make the biggest improvements.

I'm assuming that whether you are a newbie (like me) or a hardened portrait professional you probably want to improve your art and be the best that you can be? Right?

So are you up for it? Is it something you would like to engage in? Shall we do it here on Show Your Face?

Let me know. Remember - Majority rule!

Also let me know if you have ideas of what you would like to study for a month with Facers, you can leave a comment, social media me with the #ShowYourFace Hashtag or even email me.

Thanks Facers!

Ok, on with this week's Show Your Face...

My Share this week...

face sketches in pencil

My share this week actually carries on from the work that I did in the last Show Your Face. This time it is a study from a tea-room and just of one face. I tried three sketches starting from the top left and working clock wise. The picture at the bottom was the last one and was the one that was nearer to the look of the face and the tilt that I was going for. Took me three attempts but I got there!

Oh and the chewed pencil? That was one of my cats! She seems to have a taste for twigs and the occasional pencil.

Over To You...
Link your faces artwork, leave a comment on what you got from 'Show Your Face Inspired By' and if you would like to do it again.

Ok, so I know that some of you just scrolled down to link your face but please do take the time to read the first part of this blog post, Facers Needs Your Input!

My Share This Week...

This week I've taken my inspiration from Kissinia from Blue Birdie

A study of faces on a train

I love watching Kissinia's art journey on her blog and via Instagram, she has a creative vision of the world that I just adore. So for my #ShowYourFace this week I went for one of her people studies from January this year and did a loosely sketched study of people's faces on a train done with Derwent Graphik Line marker and watercolour.

The first thing I notice when doing this is that you don't see people's eyes, they are looking down, reading, looking at their phones and doing everything they can to avoid eye contact, well at least that is the case on the tube in London.

Ok that is me this week...

My Share This Week...

This week I've take some inspiration from a lots of lovely facers and mixed it all together to make my #ShowYourFaceInspiredBy share.

Kim Dellow A profile of a female face

For the style of the women I've been inspired by Lee Krek from All About Art And Me. I love the style of her sketched people with their wonderful patterned clothes, I wish I could capture her style better as it always makes me smile. I also love how she does her shading too, so I added a little bit of that in my portrait this week, but I'm not really sure it shows up in the photo.

I've drawn my portrait with a black Derwent Graphik Line Painter on an old book page, gessoed into my junk art journal. I love sketches on book pages and Julie Ann Lee from Magpieheaven always uses book pages so beautifully when she uses them in her work, so I was inspired to add a bit of book page behind my face by Julie Ann.

Kim Dellow profile of a women close up

Then the time theme, and I think a bit of the background colouring and use of watercolour, are influenced by watching the #ShowYourFace work this month from Susi from Froebelsternchen and Valerie-Jael from Bastelmania who also jointly run the challenge blog Art Journal Journey.

So that's me this week and who has been inspiring me, in a portrait nutshell, now...

Show Your Face Inspired By June Walker

Hey Facers, I hope you have had a good week. I've been up against some tough deadlines this week so I've not yet managed to get around everyone's links from last week yet, so a MASSIVE SORRY and I hope to get around them soon.

So my share for Show Your Face Inspired By is inspired by June Walker.

A multicoloured face inspired by June Walker

I love the way June uses colour in here faces. I love the way she uses hot and cold colours and how, for me, they seem to show light and shade. So I thought I would have a bit of a colour play in my art journal with my face this week. I've used Derwent Intense pencils but I've left the colours pretty loose and played with major shapes.

Show Your Face Inspired By Susana Magenheimer, Giggles and Beverley Baird

Welcome Facers! It is the first Friday of August so let's roll out the red carpet for Show Your Face Inspired By {Insert Name}.

Drum roll please!

Show Your Face Inspired By {INSERT NAME}
If you need a quick reminder, or you are new to our weekly share, then for the next four Fridays you have the option to either post your normal face artwork OR push out of your comfort zone, and try something inspired by one (or more) of your fellow sharers from our #ShowYourFace community.

Either option is fine but I do encourage you to try to do a #ShowYourFaceInspiredBy at least once this month.

The inspiration can be any aspect of their portrait work like how they construct their face, the materials they use, how they use colour or even how they use other elements like words or 3D objects, whatever you like. Just make sure you name them with a link to their blog (or social media gallery) in your blog post (or social media write up if you are using a gallery) and share what you were inspired by in their work.

So what is the point to Show Your Face Inspired By {Insert Name}?

The aims are to:

  • Give us a little kick out of our comfort zones
  • Try something new
  • Surprise ourselves!
  • Extend our technique / style toolboxes
  • Share some bloggy/ social media/ gallery love!
  • Oh and have fun of course!

Please make sure that:
  1. The face artwork is yours, any stamps or templates you use to build the face should be designed by you, just as with the usual #ShowYourFace.

  3. You name the person or people that inspired your work and link to them.
  4. You link back to the link blog post here on my blog for that week, just as with the usual #ShowYourFace.

My Show Your Face Share this week...
For my Show Your Face Inspired By I've taken inspiration from three lovely folks Susana Magenheimer, Giggles and Beverley Baird to produce this miniature face art work.

A miniature face drawing

Susana Magenheimer from Random Artist 222's inspired me to go miniature as she loves miniature art and after a conversation in Instagram we ended up foolishly agreeing to trying a 2" x 2" artwork with a face. Eek! So I attempted the smallest art journal page that I have ever done for this week's share. She is sketched in pencil on a scrap of paper from a watercolour background.

Close up of the miniature face drawing

The words cut from newspapers were inspired by both Giggles from Happy Tiler and Beverley Baird from Bunny's Girl as I've noticed they often use cut-out words in their artwork and I really like that look so I thought I would try to incorporate it in my work this week to finish my nano-art journal page.

Over To You...
Link your faces artwork and spread the word on your blog and/or social media, hashtag #ShowYourFace and/or #ShowYourFaceInspiredBy for those of you that use them. Please do let anyone you think would be interested in sharing their portraits know about our community here.

Art It Friday - Show Your Face

Hey, hey, hey Facers! We are here again, another Friday Portrait share for the week and I've got a fun one for you today (well, I think it is fun, whether you do or not is, well, up to you!).

Before we get going, let's do the admin stuff:

1. August Is Show Your Face Inspired By {Insert Name}.
Next week is the first Friday of August and anyone who wants to join in the Show Your Face Inspired By {Insert Name} can do. All the info you need is in my Show Your Face blog post from 10th July. Briefly, it is to make some face art inspired by one (or more if you like) of the other sharers from our #ShowYourFace community.

It is optional, you don't have to do an 'inspired by' face but it is a great way to stretch ourselves, don't you think? So do have a go at least once in August if not the whole of August! But if you don't want to play, then just carry on as normal Show Your Face.

2. Blog Button
We have a blog button now! Woop! Woop! Anyone who wants to wear it on their blog with pride can grab the HTML code from below the blog button here:

grab button for Kim Dellow
<div class="kim-dellow-button" style="width: 200px; margin: 0 auto;"> <a href="http://www.kimdellow.co.uk/search/label/Show%20Your%20Face" rel="nofollow" target="_blank"> <img src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgaR-rtBxfEr8G8lvAljcDwJV4MTO9wV6B5JfNXtvlS0shRvWIdNFA4QTXqZjfTZCzW81Ga8ysbwK6_M5VgNMGaVM1hSBYPY6wwgtjsZ8p0HXkLyd8d5VhbTYCNPl1wdPU0SXXprw0xPgh_/s512-Ic42/KimDellowShowYourFace.jpg" alt="Kim Dellow" width="200" height="200" /> </a> </div>
To Install It:
On Wordpress.com:
  • Select all the grab code in the box below the button image above and copy.
  • Go to your WP-admin and in the dashboard click 'Appearance' then 'widgets' from the drop-down menu.
  • Find the 'Text' widget in the 'Available Widget' list and drag it up to 'Main Sidebar' area or whichever area you want to place it.
  • Paste the Grab code for the blog button into the body of the text widget box, give it a title if you want (optional), and press 'save'.
I'm assuming it is similar if you are using a self-hosted wordpress (wordpress.org) but I don't have a self-hosted version so can't check. Please let me know if it is different!

On Blogger:
  • Select all the grab code in the box below the button image above and copy.
  • Go to the design area of your Blogger blog and select 'Layout'.
  • Choose 'Add A Gadget' in the Sidebar section or whichever section you want to place it, then pick 'HTML/JavaScript' from the pop-up Gadget list.
  • Paste the Grab code for the blog button into the 'Content' area of the gadget, give it a title if you want (optional), and press 'Save'

Yay! Blog Button! On blog! Hopefully!

PS. I take no responsibility for messing up your blog if it doesn't work! Eek! Hey, relax – it will be OK!

3. New Here? Never Fear!
For anyone new here, this is a regular place to come and inspire, be inspired, but above all to share our portrait progress week by week. Every Friday at 10 am (BST) a new Show Your Face blog post goes live with the linky to add your blog post or online gallery picture to with any portrait work you have been doing.

Your face can be drawn, doodled, painted, stitched, be made using any materials and can be any style, all I ask is that it is your artwork. If you use templates, stencils or stamps to build the face anatomy, then they should be ones you have made yourself and not someone else's.

Finished pieces, works in progress or retro posts (i.e. older works, not from this week) are all welcome, so come join in and spread the word on your blog/social media outlets. Use hashtag #ShowYourFace if you like!

And remember for August we are doing Show Your Face Inspired By {Insert Name} for those who want to play along.

Admin Over – Let's Get On With The Share!

Really I should have done a quick share this week as the post is quickly turning into a bit of a mountain. But true to Kimberley (that's me btw) form, I've decided to share a process blog post today for a bit of fun.

I shall try to keep it quick – feel free to ask any questions if any bit is unclear.

My face share this week looks far more complex than it actually is.

Collage Selfie made from Studio Calico papers

It is a paper collage selfie made up from bits of patterned paper and it is super simple to do and surprisingly, or at least for me, still resembles the original model, which as it was a selfie was in fact me.

If you want to have a go at this you will need:
A photo of a face
Photo-editing software like Photoshop Elements or similar (I'm guessing that the free online photo-editing software PicMonkey can do this too but I've not had a go yet.)
Tracing paper
Pencil
Scissors
Craft knife, I used a swivel knife
Cutting board
Patterned paper
Glue

Step 1 - Open Your Head Shot
A selfie in Photoshop Elements

Open up your head shot. It doesn't have to be perfect, obviously you are perfect, but the photo doesn't have to be!

Step 2 - Change The Colour
Changing the colours of a selfie in Photoshop Elements

Change the colour of the photo according to the light and shade areas. You can do this different ways and it depends on the software you are using. I did it in Photoshop Elements by first making a copy layer of the photograph then using the Hard Mix option from the drop-down menu in the layers palette.

(I am totally happy to walk you through this if you are lost, so do shout if I'm being too jargony!).

Step 3 - Trace The Face
Trace the face from the photo

You can print out your photograph or if you are impatient, like me, take a soft pencil and just trace the image directly from the screen (assuming you don't have a touchscreen computer that is!). DON'T PRESS HARD! You don't want to mess up your screen do you? Now, using the stylised photograph from Step 2 as reference, pick out the papers you want to use for each layer.

I decided to used red where there were black tones and teal for the red, yellow and white areas of the photograph but you can go with whatever you want, I mean that is the fun part, right?

Step 4 - Transfer Each Layer
Transfer the image to the back of the patterned paper

So switch off your head from seeing an image of a face and start thinking pattern and layers – the colours from the stylised picture in Step 2 should help, or if you are using a black and white photo then the gradients of grey will help.

Transfer the traced image onto the back of your paper but only the important parts for the paper, So for the red paper, which was representing the black area of the photo in Step 2, I just did the outline of the head and the pupils of the eyes. For the dark teal paper, which was representing the red areas in the photo, I just transferred the outline of the face and the shadow under the nose, under the cheekbone and the lips.

Continue until you have each layer transferred to the back of the patterned paper.

Step 5 - Cut It Out

Cut out the pieces and start building them up into the picture. There will be some small bits so if you think you might lose them then put them into a spare envelope as you work. It does not have to be super accurate.

Step 6 - Jigsaw Puzzle Time!
Sticking the face piece together

Remember the tracing paper from Step 3? Well it makes the perfect map to help you glue your cut-out paper pieces in the correct places. Layer the tracing paper over the top and flip it on and off as you place the cut-out pieces.

There you have it, a patterned paper collage selfie and my Show Your Face share this week.

Patterned Paper collage Selfie

Hey, put it in a frame and it would make a fun version of your family portraits for your home, wouldn't it? Right, I'm off to do one of David to put on our Kitchen Gallery wall we are slowly adding to!

So it was a long time getting here but...

Art It Friday - Show Your Face

Guess what day it is? Yep! It is Faceday and I was thinking we have been doing this since around April so it is about time that we had a blog badge, what do you think?

Well, here it is, please feel free to grab the code from the box under the badge to put it on your blog to tell the world you are sharing your face with a group of like minded folk:

grab button for Kim Dellow
<div class="kim-dellow-button" style="width: 200px; margin: 0 auto;"> <a href="http://www.kimdellow.co.uk/search/label/Show%20Your%20Face" rel="nofollow" target="_blank"> <img src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgaR-rtBxfEr8G8lvAljcDwJV4MTO9wV6B5JfNXtvlS0shRvWIdNFA4QTXqZjfTZCzW81Ga8ysbwK6_M5VgNMGaVM1hSBYPY6wwgtjsZ8p0HXkLyd8d5VhbTYCNPl1wdPU0SXXprw0xPgh_/s512-Ic42/KimDellowShowYourFace.jpg" alt="Kim Dellow" width="200" height="200" /> </a> </div>

It links straight back to the Show Your Face posts so that you can find them easily.

Right, who is up for a Face share?

For anyone new here this is a regular place to come and inspire, be inspired, but above all to share our portrait progress week by week.

I'm sharing another sketch this week, I seem to be stuck in face-sketch-mode at the moment but I'm really enjoying them.

Kim Dellow Show Your Face sketch 23rd July 2015

She is sketched in a white pen, a Signo Uni-ball, on a painted black page from my junk journal.

So that is my share for the week, now...

After the fun I had with scribbles last week I had originally thought I would do another scribble face for my share this week. But what actually came into being was this lady.

Face sketch in pen for #ShowYourFace

She isn't quite scribbles more like long strokes of a pen with a bit of scribble.

Art It Friday - Show Your Face

Hey Facers! Don't go rushing to the bottom to link up your face just yet - I've had an idea!

I thought it might be fun to try something new for August, but I wanted to give you an early heads-up so that you can get your noodles thinking about it now.

During August Art It Friday - Show Your Face will become Show Your Face Inspired By {Insert Name}.

For the month of August, that is four Fridays, pick someone from the Show Your Face linky to inspire one of your face shares for that week. It can be any aspect of their portrait work like how they construct their face, the materials they use, how they use colour or even how they use other elements like words or 3D objects, whatever you like.

Rules?
Just as with the normal Show Your Face there are no rules other than the work needs to be yours! Try using a different person from the linky to inspire your work each week. It can be anyone from all the links we have shared since the start. Make sure you name them and link to them and as always please link back to the link blog post here on my blog for that week.

It is optional! If you don't want to take part, and you just want to do normal Show Your Face feel free, you can still link up your work, inspired by other linkers or not, through the August weeks.

Remember this will run in August, so you don't have to do it now and I will keep reminding you through July, but when you hop around the blogs remember to make a note of anything that jumps out at you that you want to try in August.

Any questions then drop me a line in the comments below.

I'll keep my share this week super quick.

Scribbled face in pen

I'm calling this style scribble face! She was scribbled in pen directly, I didn't use any pencil guidelines I just went for it. It was a bit scary! But I will definitely try it again. Just wish I could get the feature perspective on a turned face right. Practise, Practise!

I will kick off this week's share with a shout out to Julie Ann Lee from Magpie Heaven. A couple of weeks or so ago I shared a little face drawing warm-up exercise with the doodling different faces in lots of boxes of colour on your page. Do you remember?

Well Julie Ann took that exercise, ran with it and made it entirely her own with this fabulous art that she shared with us on the 19th June 2015.

[Shown with kind permission of Julie Ann Lee]

Thanks Julie Ann! It is fabulous and if you haven't already then do go and give her some blog love she has a gorgeous blog.

Right, on with this week and here is my piece. This is a pencil sketch I actually made back in April.

Show Your Face pencil portrait 3rd July 2015

I liked her so much that I then went on to use her as the basis of this watercolour that I shared with you for the 24th April's Show Your Face. But I never actually showed the sketch that lead to her.

That's me, what about you?
