Trish Latimer New Stamp Release: The Wordgirls

Have you seen Trish Latimer's lovely new stamps? I've been having a little play and I'm in love! If you have seen them then you will know what I mean! Trish has just launched five designs of her beautiful whimsical girl sketches as rubber stamps. Wahoo! Well done Trish!

[I do use affiliate links and there are some in this blog post.]

Kim Dellow using Trish Latimer's New Stamps

This one is called Wordgirl Five but I'm unofficially calling her Fly Free. I thought I would use her on one of my faux printed look backgrounds but I've also added in a border as inspired by Trish herself. By the way, you can find a video showing how to do the Faux Printed Look technique on my YouTube channel.

I reached for my Prismacolor pencils to colour her, I've got to admit that pencils are still one of my favourite ways to colour stamped images. It has actually been a while since I last coloured an image, think it might have been January, how mad is that? I was totally in my happy place colouring Fly Free (Wordgirl 5) what a perfect stamp to colour, I love that Trish has given us scope to let our creative colouring play in such a gorgeous design.

Trish's girls are so sweet I can see them being used in all sorts of different projects art journaling, cardmaking, off the page and memory keeping, so versatile. I'm looking forward to using them again. Massive congratulations Trish, lots of luck with your new range and I can not wait to see more.

You can find out more about Trish's new range over on her blog Ink Paint Beads and you can see the new range, and buy them, over in her Etsy shop Star Trish Design.

As Featured On The Blitsy Blog: How To Build an Art Journal Page With Plastic Canvas Grids

It's the weekend and if you are looking for a fun project to get your creativity going then I have a new tutorial up on the Blitsy blog that you might want to try. It is an art journal page using Plastic Canvas grids.

[I do use affiliate links and there are some in this blog post.]

If you have been doing mixed media for a while then you might have already seen plastic canvas grids being used for mark making. Usually these grids are know for their use by stitchers in embroidery. You can find them in different shapes and use them for a whole manner of mark making. I've used them as stencils and stamps for this art journal page. I just love the layering of the grid effect.

If you are new to mixed media then give this a go and also have a look around your house and ask yourself what would make good mark makers! It is amazing what does once you start thinking like that. Take it from me  - nothing will be safe! For those of you who already do this regularly it never hurts to revisit some of your non-traditional mark makers and see if you can come up with some new ways to use them. It is a great warm up exercise!

If you want to work your way through the steps for this page then you find them all on the Blitsy blog on my 'How To Build an Art Journal Page With Plastic Canvas Grids' post.

Happy mark making!

Kim

My Share This Week...

A WIP face from Kim Dellow for Show Your Face

My share this week is a work in progress that I've actually abandoned, so I suppose I should really call it an unfinished piece instead of a work in progress! I used a The Crafter's Workshop stencil to fill in the hair. She is draw with a Sakura pen on an acrylic paint background.

Hey Guys, if you are looking for something a bit painty and a bit textured then pop on over to the Blitsy Blog today!

[I do use affiliate links and there are some in this blog post.]

I'm sharing the making of this mixed media art journal page, it is an abstract piece with lots of lush layers and what's this? No circles? Nope! I've gone all right angles and straight lines this week!

So don't you be square and miss out on seeing it! Did you see what I did there? *Sigh* It has been a long week!

If you fancy seeing how this one was put together then do pop on over to the Blitsy blog and my 'How To Make Abstract Journal Art' tutorial.

As Featured On The Blitsy Blog - How To Make A Bold Chalk Paint Journal Page

Time for my Blitsy blog tutorial and this week I'm sharing how to make a layered DecoArt Chalk Finish paint Art journal page.

[I do use affiliate links and there are some in this blog post.]

A DecoArt chalk paint art journal page from Kim Dellow

That stuff is not just for your furniture revamps, it looks great on paper too! I do love blues and reds together don't you? There is something about that contrast that just pops for me, which is probably why I just keep going back to that colour combo.

You can follow all the steps and seeing all the layering that I did over on the Blitsy blog in my 'How To Make A Bold Chalk Paint Journal Page' blog post.

Have you used the DecoArt Chalk Finish paints for something other than furniture revamps? I would love to know!

Sharing An Art Journal Theme

I've been doing a lot of drawing in my art journal recently. I have been using different kinds of Sharpie pens either on fresh pages or on pages that already had a few layers of paint left over from previous projects.

I've been sharing some of my surface design patterns on my Instagram feed and I will be blogging them at some point. But in the meantime here are a couple of pages that I haven't posted to instagram as yet, they will be going up today or tomorrow!

Kim Dellow - Page one of a two page art journal series

They are both pages from my Junk Journals. For both of these pages I've used white water-based Sharpie paint pens over acrylic paint backgrounds. The two pages sit opposite each other in my journal but I decided not to do them as a double page spread even though they had the coordinating paint background with the lovely green punchinella texture.

Kim Dellow - Page two of a two page art journal series

It is more a two page series with a red theme I think and the white sketched motifs links the pages together.

Have you been keep your flyers for turning into Junk Journals? If you aren't sure what I mean then you can learn more about my junk journals on my YouTube Channel or in my Reusing Flyers blog post from a couple of weeks ago.

What themes have you been working on in your art journals?

My Share This Week...

Kim Dellow face sketch in ball point pen on crackle paint

My share this week is a ball point pen sketch over crackle paint, unfortunately I don't remember whose crackle paint it is! I think it might be DecoArt Media. It is a tester page in my Junk Journal and I used a copper acrylic paint glaze over the top of the crackle.

As Featured On Blitsy - How To Make A Glitter Art Journal Page

I'm not usually a glitter girl. Don't get me wrong, I love glitter and I have tonnes of the stuff but I rarely actually use it in my projects. Well, that just won't do, so I decided to use some in a journal page for Blitsy.

[I do use affiliate links and there are some in this blog post.]

Well not just some, I used a lot! I had been playing with glitter through stencils so thought it would make a fun, shiny journal page and a great way to stretch your stash. Instead of using gels or texture paste try using your glitter glue.

If you want to see more there is a full step by step called 'How To Make A Glitter Art Journal Page' on the Blitsy blog.

Time to get out the glitter glue!

Video: Reusing Flyers

Time for a new video! I'm on a video roll, in fact I was so much on a roll that I did not spot the spelling mistake. D'oh! But poor spelling aside this video shows you a great way to source free art journals plus it has a little tour inside some of my art journals too.

A new video from Kim Dellow how to source free art journals

I talk about my junk journals a lot on my blog, I use them all the time. But I think that junk journals can mean different things to different people. Some people make their own junk journals using recycled and re-purposed paper and ephemera and that is a great thing to do and looks amazing. But when I talk about my junk journals I mean the repurposed flyers that I use to make art in.

Kim Dellow a close up of my work desk

I have a whole bunch of them on the go at once and they sit on my work desk in easy-grab range. I will often use them to warm up in, or experiment in or just to clean off mark making tools whilst I am working on projects so that I don't waste any paints or mediums.

Video:

If you are interested I go through it all in my video, what flyers I use, where to find them, what you can do in them and then I give you a peek at some of the work I have been doing in them.

I call them my junk journals because, well firstly free flyers often end up thrown away in the recycle bin don't they? But also because re-purposing flyers for art takes that white page fear or the fear of 'spoiling' a new journal away.

You can mess them up and really not care at all about them. You haven't wasted anything, and you have learnt just by doing the mess! So they are great for no-pressure experimenting and you can work up anything you particularly like into an independent piece or in your more 'pretty' journals if you wish.

A peak into some of Kim Dellow's junk journals

So if you aren't already repurposing the old, unwanted free flyers that you find everywhere, then I hope I have persuaded you to give them a go. Also this is a great way to dabble into mixed media if you are new to it and are not sure you are ready for a lovely clean art journal.

Kim Dellow a pile of my current Junk Journals

Hope you enjoy the video and don't forget to subscribe to my channel on YouTube to be notified when I put new ones up, hopefully without my dodgy spelling!

Catch you later.

My Share This Week...

A paint pen face

I was flicking through my junk journals recently and I stumbled across this face that I did last year using paint pens. The odd thing is is that I think it was inspired by someone or something I had seen but I never wrote the inspiration down so now it is only a feeling and I have no recollection of what or why I did it.

I had loads of fun making it and playing with the paints on the page so if you are want to see more do pop on over to my How To Make A Die-Cut and Watercolour Art Journal Page on the Blitsy blog.

My Share This Week...

Show Your Face geometric art journal page

Ok, so another partially hidden face! I seem to be in a partial face theme at the moment. I thought I would match up my face with some stamping this week. There is a reason, I'm in the middle of preparing for my PaperArtsy demos and Make and Takes at the Craft show in Alexandra Palace this weekend so it seemed natural to throw in some stamping on my face this week.

The face is sketched with a Sakura Pigma Micron pen then for the stamping I have used one of my own stamps from the PaperArtsy Eclectica³ {Kim Dellow} 01 set, a stamp from the PaperArtsy Eclectica³ {Emma Godfrey} 15 set, one from the PaperArtsy Eclectica³ {Everything Art} 01, one from PaperArtsy Hot Pick 1604 and a couple from PaperArtsy Hot Pick 1602.

See I packed them in but then I did have to get my stamping practice on for the weekend! The paint is all PaperArtsy Fresco Finish acrylics by the way and I'm working in one of my junk journals which I will be taking with me for the show if you happen to be going and want a closer look!

As Featured On Blitsy - How to Make A Yupo Art Journal Page

I have a fun tutorial on the Blitsy blog today using the synthetic paper Yupo.

[I do use affiliate links and there are some in this blog post.]

Close up of acrylic paint on Yupo paper

In my tutorial I make a moon-themed art journal page using acrylic paint on the Yupo. I do love the effects you can get with Yupo, look at the cool texture! It is such a fun surface to play on and the paint reacts differently to the smooth synthetic paper. You don't have to use acrylic paints it takes other materials like watercolour well too.

If you want to see more then see the full How to Make A Yupo Art Journal Page tutorial on the Blitsy Blog.

This week has gone in a whirl and I did not have time to work to the 'Inspired By' theme again. I'm sharing a quick scribble in my junk journal that I'm calling 'Hidden'. My Share This Week...

Show Your Face share for 4th March 2016

My share today was inspired by Amanda Openshaw. I've been using a lot of teals recently, if you look back at my Show Your Face shares over the last few weeks a lot of them, most of them, include teal and if not teal then blue.

I mentioned this on facebook this week and Amanda said that she has been using a lot of reds and oranges and perhaps we should swap colours! So I took her up on the challenge and have gone with red and orange for my share today! Thanks Amanda for inspiring me out of by colour rut!

Show Your Face

Hey lovely Facers, I hope you have had a good week full  of Faces. We are almost in March which means there will be an optional prompt running from next week. As always you don't have to use the prompt but it is a good way to push yourself out of your comfort zone and also as it is an 'Inspired by' prompt you can spread a bit of love for other artists you admire.

Anyway on with this week's share!

First up the admin...

Schedule:

My Share This Week...

three quarter profile

Following on from last week's profile for my Show Your Face share I thought I would go for a almost three quarters face. She is done with a Sakura Pigma Micron pen on a painted background. As a page I don't think she is quite finished but I'm letting her sit for a bit to see what develops.

Show Your Face

Hey lovely facers, this week has a been little busy for me here on my blog but please don't worry if you ever come to my blog and can not find the Show Your Face post. Checkout the tabs at the top of the page, I've put in a shortcut so that you can find it straight away. The shortcuts should also show up on the mobile version of this page in the drop down menu under the blog title.

Have you had a chance to see my new video yet? Trish Latimer, editor of Craft Stamper, Tracy Scott, Clare Lloyd and myself have each shared a full tutorial on how we make our faces in real time. It is called  'Creating Faces' and is available to buy now as a DVD, Bluray or via the Traplet online streaming/ download site. There is also a free introduction that you watch to see what the video is about.

Creating Faces Video

Last thing to mention before I let you get on to the link up, I've had a chance to update the schedule with lots of amazing prompt suggestions from Facers so mark them in your calendar.

My Share This Week...

If you want to know what you can do with the techniques I show in the new Creating Faces video then how about my Show Your Face share this week?

I've used the same basic technique for her as I demonstrate in the video, the only difference is that I've done this one in my junk journal on a painted page and used acrylic paint to colour her eyes, lips and hair band then blocked out the background to help her to pop from the page. In the video I use the Kuretake Gansai Tambi watercolours/gouache paints to colour her eyes and lips and she is drawn on canvas board.
