Show Your Face

Hello amazing Facers, thank you so much for taking the time out of your day to link your work up here! I just love seeing your inspirational faces even though I am not getting the time to hop around and leave comments on your blogs/galleries. I hope you are all still enjoying your face practice and getting more time than I am to hop around each others blogs to leave some love!

Shall we share again this week?

First up the admin...

Schedule:
  • Head Positions - May 2016 (try different head potions through the month. Suggested by June Walker)
  •  Quick Draw Faces - July 2016 (set a timer to say 10-15 min - or less if you dare! - and draw a face or several faces in that time. Suggested by Gibby Frogett).
  • Change Hands - September 2016 (try using your non-dominant hand to draw/ paint / make your face this month. Suggested by Hazel Agnew).
Remember all are optional prompts, you don't have to use them, they are there if you fancy playing, if not just link up your usual work as normal.

Don't forget:
  • Show Your Face is a community link up for portrait work in any style or medium.
  • the aims are to share, learn, practise, inspire, and be inspired.
  • to make sure that the face artwork is yours, if you use any stamps or templates to build the face they should be designed by you.
  • the link is open from 10 am (BST) every Friday and stays open for a week, so link away.
  • finished pieces, works in progress or retro posts (i.e. older works, not from this week) are all welcome.
  • to link back to the link blog post here for that week.
  • Spread the word on your blog/social media outlets and use the #ShowYourFaceFriday hashtag in social media.
  • There is a prompt every other month. Using the prompts is totally optional and just there if you fancy playing along. You can still post your face work even if you haven't used the prompt.

Looking For The Blog Button?

If you want to wear the blog button with pride then hop on over to Show Your Face 31st July 2015 to grab it and there are instructions on how to put it on your blog there too.

My Share This Week...

My Show Your Face share this week is a quick sketch in my junk journal in pen. The page already had some gesso and ink stains from a previous project and to pop her off the page a gave her a squiggly Afro hair. As I was doing it I realised that I had missed a trick and should have done her hair with writing instead of squiggles, perhaps I will try that next time.

Over To You...

Link your faces artwork and spread the word on your blog and/or social media, hashtag #ShowYourFaceFriday. Please do let anyone you think would be interested in sharing their portraits know about our community here.

Catch you later Face-Artinators

My Share This Week...

Show Your Face geometric art journal page

Ok, so another partially hidden face! I seem to be in a partial face theme at the moment. I thought I would match up my face with some stamping this week. There is a reason, I'm in the middle of preparing for my PaperArtsy demos and Make and Takes at the Craft show in Alexandra Palace this weekend so it seemed natural to throw in some stamping on my face this week.

The face is sketched with a Sakura Pigma Micron pen then for the stamping I have used one of my own stamps from the PaperArtsy Eclectica³ {Kim Dellow} 01 set, a stamp from the PaperArtsy Eclectica³ {Emma Godfrey} 15 set, one from the PaperArtsy Eclectica³ {Everything Art} 01, one from PaperArtsy Hot Pick 1604 and a couple from PaperArtsy Hot Pick 1602.

See I packed them in but then I did have to get my stamping practice on for the weekend! The paint is all PaperArtsy Fresco Finish acrylics by the way and I'm working in one of my junk journals which I will be taking with me for the show if you happen to be going and want a closer look!

My Share This Week...

I'm calling this week's face 'Beard and Glasses'! It is a man's face, in case you weren't sure :) and is quite a loose piece. Done really quickly with gouache and a brush. I kind of thought it would be fun to do a man for a change and to just be relaxed about the features. It kind of frees you up if you try not to worry about it too much!

three quarter profile

Following on from last week's profile for my Show Your Face share I thought I would go for a almost three quarters face. She is done with a Sakura Pigma Micron pen on a painted background. As a page I don't think she is quite finished but I'm letting her sit for a bit to see what develops.

My Share This Week...

One of the things I like working on with my faces is light and shade, positive and negative space and that is my share this week. I played a little with light and shade in paint with my finger in my junk journal. I wasn't going for true realism and perfect features, but more trying to imply form using light and shade.

This is great fun to try, I don't use any guide marks or structure for these types of faces, I just let the face develop from the page and using my finger seems to help to switch off the part of my brain that likes structure and order. If you have never tried this type of painting faces give it a go, it is very freeing!

Unfortunately, I think my ordered brain did re-engage into the process as I found I started to fuss and put in detail lines with a palette knife so I stopped working on the page and just left it.

Tip for if you want to try this - use a page that already has a layer or two of paint and that you have not seen for a while so it is like you are seeing the page afresh.

Show Your Face

Hey lovely facers, this week has a been little busy for me here on my blog but please don't worry if you ever come to my blog and can not find the Show Your Face post. Checkout the tabs at the top of the page, I've put in a shortcut so that you can find it straight away. The shortcuts should also show up on the mobile version of this page in the drop down menu under the blog title.

Have you had a chance to see my new video yet? Trish Latimer, editor of Craft Stamper, Tracy Scott, Clare Lloyd and myself have each shared a full tutorial on how we make our faces in real time. It is called  'Creating Faces' and is available to buy now as a DVD, Bluray or via the Traplet online streaming/ download site. There is also a free introduction that you watch to see what the video is about.

Creating Faces Video

Last thing to mention before I let you get on to the link up, I've had a chance to update the schedule with lots of amazing prompt suggestions from Facers so mark them in your calendar.

My Share This Week...

If you want to know what you can do with the techniques I show in the new Creating Faces video then how about my Show Your Face share this week?

I've used the same basic technique for her as I demonstrate in the video, the only difference is that I've done this one in my junk journal on a painted page and used acrylic paint to colour her eyes, lips and hair band then blocked out the background to help her to pop from the page. In the video I use the Kuretake Gansai Tambi watercolours/gouache paints to colour her eyes and lips and she is drawn on canvas board.

Learn How To Draw And Paint Mixed Media Faces

You all know that I'm pretty much obsessed with drawing and painting faces don't you? If you are a regular to my blog then you can't have helped but notice the weekly community art share link up that I host called Show Your Face. Well if you are fan too of drawing and painting faces on your mixed media projects and in your art journal then you are going to love this new Creating Faces video from the people who bring you Craft Stamper Magazine.

Trish Latimer, editor of Craft Stamper, along with three other designers Tracy Scott, Clare Lloyd and Kim Dellow (Hold on! That is ME!) are sharing how they create their mixed media faces in 'Creating Faces' the video, coming to a DVD player, Bluray player or the Traplet online streaming/ download site NOW!

Creating Faces Video showing how to add faces to your mixed media work

Ok so I might be getting a bit excited, I could hear that deep film announcer guy's voice in my head just now (could you hear him too or was that just me?).

Anyway, I AM pretty excited because, well 1. I'm one of the designers sharing how I make one of my illustrative faces and 2. I've seen all the videos and they are pretty fab! Each designer shares all their tips and tricks and you get to see the whole process in real time.

If you are new to face drawing and painting each designer goes through all the steps they take from start to finish so it is a great place to start. If you are further along with your own face art there are plenty of techniques and tips to add your mixed media toolbox and adapt to your own practice.

Back cover of the Creating Faces video

Creating Faces is available in a choice of formats: £14.95 Bluray, £12.95 DVD £2.50 single download or £8.95 for all four downloads and you can find the Bluray and DVD in the Traplet shop and the downloads on the Traplet streaming/ download page.

But you might want to get yourself along to the Craft Stamper Facebook page as they are doing a GIVEAWAY!

Hope you enjoy watching it as much as we enjoyed putting it together.

Kim

My Share This Week...

This week I've used our Focus On Eyes theme as an excuse to try a Manga-style face. It is something I've wanted to try for ages but have not had the courage to give it a go! So I thought this would be a good kick out of my comfort zone and a great way to try it out. He/She (I haven't quite decided which!) is a pencil sketch.

My Share This Week...

In last week's Show Your Face I used the theme to have a look at the eyes I've been drawing, I did a kind of eye 'stock-take' as I called it! Having done that I could see where my comfort zone was when I draw eyes, so this week I tried to break out of my comfort zone a little and tried these HUGE stylised eyes. She is done using Prismacolor pencils.

My Share This Week...

I thought I would take the opportunity to do an eye 'stock-take' for my first post this month! So I've gathered together some of my eyes from 2015 Show Your Face Shares to see what my style is or how it is developing at the moment. There is definitely a similarity coming through with my eye style so it is going to be fun trying out different things this month and seeing how that affects my practice.

My Last Face for 2015...

I went for paint to make my face this week. She is made using a very simple palette of gold, raw umber and white. The base was a junk journal page that had the cleanings from a stencil with molding paste from a previous work.

I love the texture and I altered how I used the paint, so I added it thickly in places or used it in a wash in other areas.

You can see the shine of the gold paint when it catches the light.

Over To You...

Link your faces artwork here for the next two weeks until the 1st January 2016 when we will start the weekly link up again. Please do let anyone you think would be interested in sharing their portraits know about our community here.
