VIDEO: Make Your Own Paint Splatter Art

Hey Pineapple, how are you doing? Well we are all splatter here in my studio at the moment with some paint splatter art fun! Want to join in? I have a video all about it today and sharing some tips and tricks for getting the most out of this fun technique. Now I'm thinking that this is a pretty fun technique to use in art journals and on painting projects for texture but it can easily be used for card making too. But wait! How about using the initials of your loved ones names to make some bespoke monogram art?! Now that sounds like a fab idea to me!

For my Pineapple art I've used paint markers but I run through some other materials you might want to try this technique with in my video. You can make this one as easy or as complex as you want. Try layering it up on your mixed media projects, art journals or how about on old book pages? Have a play and see what effects you can come up with and I'm pretty sure that each one you do will be unique!

VIDEO: Try This Watercolor Painting Texture Technique

I love playing around with watercolor painting textures! There are lots of different ways to make really interesting watercolor textured backgrounds and features for your art journal pages, painting projects and even for cardmaking too, it is the medium that just keeps on giving!

So today I am sharing a painting texture that I have been experimenting with and I have a video showing all the steps that you need to get the texture yourself. I've used both a drawing ink and watercolor paint for my textures but feel free to play with what you have in your stash and let me know how it goes and which products work and which don't!

Winsor and Newton Drawing Ink: Canary Yellow, Ultramarine

VIDEO: 5 Ways With Background Dies

What are your favourite background dies at the moment and how do you use them? VIDEO: Using Stencils With Watercolours in Your Art Journal Or Sketchbook

My video share today is all about using stencils and watercolours. I really enjoy using watercolours with stencils and today's video shares a fun technique you might want to try out. I've gone for a very stylised, almost illustrative look with my design today, because I am really loving that look at the moment, but you can adapt the techniques to other styles too and use them in your art journal or your sketchbook.

I've used two stencils from StencilGirl, the lovely feathers designed by Rae Missigman and matched them up with one of my own DIY stencils that I made based on a Moroccan tile design. I think the three designs work really well together, what do you think?

There are lots of tips in the video as well as how to correct mistakes with watercolours! Oops!

VIDEO: Abstract Shapes Art Journal Page Tutorial

I'm happy to say that I have a video to share today. I know it has been a while since my last video due to my little break, but last Friday I spent a day filming videos, and so here we are! New video time!

So this week I am sharing my start to finish process on this abstract shapes art journal page with some thoughts on how I go about creating what I call organic art journal pages, or pages where I don't have a plan or an idea in my head that I am working towards and I just let them develop how they want.

We've talked about this before here on my blog and I know some of you are more comfortable planning and some of you just like to let go. There is no right or wrong way to do it in my mind but I like to practice both and if you, like me are more comfortable with planning and want to break free and practice being more organic when it comes to art journaling then I have some tips in this week's video from one planner to another, just for you!

VIDEO: Drawing With Ink Pads

Are you a stamper? Do you have ink pads? I would not quite call myself a stamper, although I have stamped a lot in the last few years, but I have still managed to collect quite a few ink pads! Wow, how useful these little tools are! You don't have to just use them for stamping do you? There are a whole range of different techniques you can use them for aren't there? But have you ever tried to draw with your ink pads?

Drawing with ink pads is a great way to make art! It is really expressive and the textures you can get just from pressing an ink pad to paper are wonderful. So for my video share today I thought I would walk you through some of the marks you can get and share a couple of art journal pages, made just using ink pads, to inspire you to look at your ink pads in a new light.

Another great thing about drawing with ink pads is that it is a really quick way to do some art, so I've added this technique to my 5 Minute Create series. The 5 Minutes Create video series is all about ideas for fitting art into even the tightest of schedules. But if you do find yourself with more than 5 minutes to create then these techniques are also great for doing as warm up exercises too. I only have a couple of videos in the series at the moment but I will be adding to them so keep your eyes out!

AS FEATURED ON: Blitsy - How To Make Colorful Tea Light Holders

I just wanted to pop in today to give you a heads-up I have a new and colourful tutorial for you today, to get your week started with a smile. It's over on the Blitsy blog at the moment and it shows how I turned a small jam jar into this super colourful tea light holder.

It is very easy and a lot of fun to do and I even added in some glitter to mine to add a little extra texture. I was really pleased at how the glitter showed with the light, I wasn't sure it would work so that was a bonus! Don't you think that this would be a perfect project for a little Valentine's Day decorating? These tea light holders would look super cute dressing a table for a cosy and special Valentine's meal, what do you think? Just a thought!

6 Tutorials To Have A Go At This Year

Happy New Year! The New Year is here and I would like to wish you a really lovely 2017, may it be full of creative joy for you.

I have the last of my 2016 work round-ups blog posts and today it is all about tutorials that you might like to have a go at and get your creative 2017 started with!

So let's get straight into it with gel medium!

1. Colour Your Gel Medium

This is a super simple technique to get you eased back into making after the holiday season.

A really fun thing to do is colour gel medium with powdered pigments, you know, like the Ken Oliver Color Bursts or Brushos. They colour medium really well, you only need a tiny amount and they don't change the nature of the medium, so if it is transparent when dry it will still be transparent when dry when you add the colour.

I have a full tutorial over on the Blitsy blog called 'How To Decorate A Mesh Bag With Ken Oliver Color Burst' to show you how.


2. We All Love Gel Skins!

Sticking with gel medium how about gel skins? Even if you have made gel skins before they are so much fun and a great technique to revisit from time to time. And if you are new to them they are really easy to make.

This tutorial shows you a technique for adding texture into your gel skin and the finished project is a free-standing heart decor gel skin piece but it is great for making flowers and other items too, so give it a go! 3. When Infusions Met Embossing Ink

Fancy a bit of experimenting? Why not try this technique? Grab your embossing ink like VersaMark for example, and some powdered pigment like the PaperArtsy Infusions and give it a go.



This technique works on other powered pigments too like the Ken Oliver Color Burst and Brusho, so why not try them out?


4. Make A Mixed Media Necklace From Old Jeans

Ready to get into something a little more detailed? Then the next project is perfect for you!

This project is all about recycling those old jeans into lovely, wearable artwork. Add a little bit of stamping and some paint, a couple of beads and a chain and you have a beautifully crafted piece of jewellery.

5. Make 2017 Your Year Of Sketching

At the end of last year I shared a great drawing exercise that I have loved doing in 2016, and I am continuing for 2017, in the hope that you would join me and start doing it too!



It is really simple and doesn't need to take a lot of time but do it every day and you will start noticing the differences in your creativity, sketching and style. You can find the exercise in my 'A Fun Sketching Exercise To Turn Into A Habit For 2017' blog post.


6. Make A Box Vignette

Now that you are nicely warmed up and ready to head out into the new creativity opportunities that 2017 holds for you, my last tutorial suggestion is a little more meaty and full of things to get your creative teeth stuck into.

I love putting scenes into boxes and tins and this tutorial shows you, step by step, the making of this little single flower scene in a box using various techniques including different ways to use embossing powders. So great to pick up some tips and to create your own little scene with.

VIDEO: Seth Apter-Inspired Canvas Board PaperArtsy Make and Take

Back in September this year I did some Make and Takes for PaperArtsy in the Crafting At Ally Pally show, I filmed all the make and takes whilst I was designing and making them but I haven't had a chance to edit and add a voice over. Well until now that is! Starting this week I have my first PaperArtsy Make and Take video to share with you and this one is all about Seth Apter products.

The canvas board uses products from Seth Apter's PaperArtsy, Impressions Obsessions, StencilGirl and Spellbinders range, plus the PaperArtsy Fresco Finish acrylic paints. In this video I share, from start to finish, my process for this piece as well as using one of my favourite design tricks to add a dynamic harmony to a piece. AS FEATURED ON: Blitsy With Oil Pastels, Distress Crayons and Artist Painstiks

I don't know if you have spotted them yet but in the past week or so I have had three step by steps how-tos posted on the Blitsy blog. I thought I would put a heads-up here so that if you haven't spotted them and you fancy taking a look, you can do.

All three projects are different and use different products but they do have a common theme and that is they all use some sort of pigment in a stick format. Stay with me, you will soon get what I mean!

Get Started With Oil Pastels

So the first pigment-in-a-stick post shares a project idea to help you to get started with oil pastels.

Now I used Sennelier Oil Pastels for this make but you can easily go for another brand of oil pastel for this project and there are plenty of them about to choose from.

Oil pastels are a great way to add a lot of colour easily and quickly to a project. But unless you are used to using them they may be a little intimidating to start with. So this project uses a really simple shape and a couple of fun techniques to get you started and you can find all the instructions in my 'How To Get Started With Oil Pastels' blog post.



Art Journaling With Distress Crayons

The next project uses the Ranger Tim Holtz Distress Crayons.

For this project I've used several techniques and utilised the different properties of Distress Crayons to build up a colourful art journal page with them. You can spot a resist, a subtractive technique, some water-reactive techniques and then just the lovely thickness of using the crayon as it is. So I hope you have fun playing with this one and you can see all the steps in my 'How To Make A Tim Holtz Distress Crayon Art Journal Page' blog post.

But don't forget that I also have a film comparing Distress Crayons and Crayola Slick Stix on my YouTube channel and that contains lots of techniques for trying out with your crayons.



Playing with Shiva Artist Paintstiks

The final project in this stick-format pigment mini-series explores the Shiva Artist Paintstiks.

The Shiva Artist Paintstiks have been around for many years but they tend to be overlooked by non-textile artists as they were originally designed to be used on fabric. So like the Sennelier Oil Pastels that we started with today they are an artist quality oil pigment stick but they work particularly well on fabric as once dry they don't move or smudge, so are a great way to add designs to fabric.

But I've not used them on fabric for this make, I've made an art journal page in one of my paper junk journals and I share all the steps over on my 'How To Make An Art Journal Page With Shiva Artist's Paintstiks' blog post.


There you have it, three different stick products for adding colour to a project and three different projects stuffed full of ideas and techniques for using the sticks on your next project.

AS FEATURED ON: Blitsy - How To Make A Textured Art Journal Page

I have a new tutorial up on the Blitsy blog at the moment and this week I've been playing with some Prima Marketing products and making a textured art journal page with a neutrals colour scheme.

Well I say art journal page but I can see this design lending itself well to cards or if you added a photograph then it would make a lovely scrapbook page. Put it on a canvas and you would have some home decor for a wall. So it really is one of those multi-usable designs if you know what I mean?! The background colour is a mix of the Prima Marketing watercolours and some Tim Holtz Distress inks and I've added in a little bit of acrylic paint in there too.

This is not my usual type of colour scheme as I am drawn to brights and jewel colours normally, but it is fun to mix it up a bit from time to time isn't it? There is also some die-cuts and stamping thrown into the mix as well as some stencilling and a resist. Oh and did I mention the crumpled up old book page? TUTORIAL: Box Vignette With WOW Embossing Powder

I am fascinated by little stories encased in small boxes or tins, little vignettes or dioramas made on a miniature scale and enclosed in an improbable object. Do you know the sort of thing that I mean?  It is like a sneak peek into someone's life or imagination but in miniature. I'm not sure what it is I love about them so much. It could be the spark of inspiration that they incite in me as I imagine the story that they depict or if it is the miniature world that they make. I just find them enthralling.

If you have seen any of my sardine tin art then you will have seen some of this obsession coming out. But I haven't done one for a long old while and in fact the project I am sharing today was made way back in 2013! I am also sharing the step by step for this project today but the papers and stamps are a little out of date now, however, you can can easily swap them out for other stamps and papers if you do not have these exact ones in your stash.

What You Will Need:
Kaisercraft: Graffiti Texture Clear Stamp
WOW! Embossing Powders: Earthtone Mint; Earthtone Blueberry; Earthtone Paprika; Pearlescent Gold Satin Pearl
WOW! Embossing Pen
WOW! Melt-It!
Tsukineko VersaMark ink pad
Square Wood Shadow Box Frame 10cm x 10cm x 3.5cm (4" x 4" x 1 1/2")
Prima Marketing Lifetime paper pad
Glass mini bottle
Seed beads
Craft Wire (1.02 mm / 18 gauge)
Pliers
Heat tool
Ranger Melting pot
Pie dish
Heat resistant spatula and tweezers
Golden Soft Gel Medium
Glue Stick
Doilies


To Decorate The Box

STEP 1: 

Cover the box with torn pieces of the patterned paper using gel medium and let the box dry. Then stamp the top left corner of the box with the VersaMark ink. 

STEP 2:

Sprinkle the Blueberry embossing powder over part of the stamping, catching the excess on spare paper.

STEP 3:

Repeat for the Paprika and Mint embossing powders until the stamping is covered with all three colours and heat set them. Then repeat for the bottom right hand corner and the inside of both corners.

STEP 4:

Add glue stick to the corners decorated with the embossing powder.

STEP 5:

Cover with Blueberry embossing powder.

STEP 6: 

Heat set the powder then repeat the process with the Mint embossing powder until you are happy with the coverage. Add glue stick over the edges of the box both inside and out and sprinkle with the Pearlescent Gold Satin Pearl embossing powder and heat set. Finish with two thin doilies, or one thick doily, stuck on the inside.

To Make The Bottle Vase And Flower

STEP 1:

Cut two circles from the designer paper and thread them onto wire. Use the pliers to bend the wire into a spiral in the centre of the circles.

STEP 2:

Add gel medium thinly over areas of the paper flower and under and over the top of the wire. Then dip the flower into the Blueberry powder, tap off the excess and dip into the Paprika. Tap off excess again and heat set.

STEP 3:

Bend two pieces of the wire into swirls and add random drops of gel medium. Dip the wire into the Mint powder, tap off the excess and heat set.

STEP 4:

Melt the Melt-It! with seed beads in a pie dish either in a melting pot if you have one or by holding it with a wooden clothes peg and melting the powder with a heat tool. If you have a melting pot stand the mini glass bottle in it and pour in the molten powder and beads from the pie dish. If you don't have a melting pot pour the liquid embossing powder and beads into the bottle quickly and move directly onto Step 5.

You can also use the heat tool over the mouth of the bottle to help keep the powder molten as you pour.

STEP 5:

Add the flower and swirls to the molten powder in the bottle, if the bottle is in the melting pot then remove it with heat-resistant tools (it’s very hot!).

Let the bottle cool completely before bending the wires as needed and sticking it inside the box.

REMEMBER METAL, GLASS AND EMBOSSING POWDER CAN GET VERY HOT SO DON'T TOUCH IT! USE HEAT RESISTANT TOOLS AT ALL TIMES!
