VIDEO: Art Slice - My New Weekly Mini Art Video Series

Have you spotted my new weekly mini-video series yet? I've started doing a weekly time-lapse video share on Instagram for all you art and making fans and I'm calling it 'Art Slice' as it is a little slice of my latest art obsession and a peek into whatever I am working on at the moment.

[I do use affiliate links and there are some in this blog post.]

Art Slice Video watercolour watermelon from Kim Dellow

My Art Slice video share has been running for a month now and I have four Art Slice videos for you to catch up on if you haven't seen them yet. At the moment I am pretty obsessed with watercolours so the four shares this month have all been about watercolours, there is a bit of a floral and fruity theme but I've used different ideas, techniques and designs in each video, so I hope they inspire you to get your watercolours out too!

If you want to be the first to get them before they go anywhere else then follow me on Instagram. They then get automatically shared in Facebook so if you prefer using Facebook you won't miss out! But for the full, uncropped video with a list of all the products I've used, which you will find in the 'Show More' section, then subscribe to my YouTube Channel where I have grouped all the Art Slice videos together in a playlist.

At the end of the month I will put a round up of my Art Slice videos here on my blog, in case you missed them during the month.

VIDEOS - Art Slice

It is the end of the month so here are all this month's Art Slices!

Art Slice: Tribal Pattern Pineapple with Watercolour Pen

Materials:
Prima Marketing Watercolor Confections Watercolor - Tropicals
Sakura Pigma Marker pen size 08
Fabriano Classico 5 Fat Pad 300g/m (140lb)

Art Slice: Sketchy Watercolour Flowers

Something cute and simple, a little sketchy meadow design using separate blocks of watercolour that don't meet and mingle.

Materials:
Sakura Pigma Marker pen size 08
Global Art Fluid Watercolor Paper Block - Cold-Press - 6 x 8
Jackson's Art Synthetic Quill Series 777 size 000
Kuretake Gansai Tambi watercolour

Art Slice: Single Flower Sketch With Pen And Watercolour

From meadows to single flowers and a sketch using a watercolour base to add structure whist you are drawing and then adds the colour to the finished image.

Materials:
Winsor and Newton Artist Watercolour: (UK) Jackson's Art; (US/Worldwide) Blitsy
Fluid Watercolor Paper block (Hot Press)
Jackson's Art Quill series 777 Brush size 000

Art Slice: Watercolour Watermelon

With this video I've added water first before adding colour to get the lovely spreading effect into the white space that is just under the watermelon skin, it just adds a bit of extra texture.

Show Your Face - Change Hands

Hey Facers, August is with us and normally this would be a prompt-free month but I've bought forward the fab prompt as suggested by Hazel Agnew - Change Hands! So, if you fancy it, do try using your non-dominant hand to draw/ paint/ stitch/ sculpt or however you make your art doing.

So who is ready for a share?

First up the admin...

Schedule:
  • Change Hands - August 2016 (try using your non-dominant hand to draw/ paint / make your face this month. Suggested by Hazel Agnew).
Remember all are optional prompts, you don't have to use them, they are there if you fancy playing, if not just link up your usual work as normal.

Don't forget:
  • Show Your Face is a community link up for portrait work in any style or medium.
  • the aims are to share, learn, practise, inspire, and be inspired.
  • to make sure that the face artwork is yours, if you use any stamps or templates to build the face they should be designed by you.
  • the link is open from 10 am (BST) every Friday and stays open for a week, so link away.
  • finished pieces, works in progress or retro posts (i.e. older works, not from this week) are all welcome.
  • to link back to the link blog post here for that week.
  • Spread the word on your blog/social media outlets and use the #ShowYourFaceFriday hashtag in social media.
  • There is a prompt every other month. Using the prompts is totally optional and just there if you fancy playing along. You can still post your face work even if you haven't used the prompt.

Looking For The Blog Button?

If you want to wear the blog button with pride then hop on over to Show Your Face 31st July 2015 to grab it and there are instructions on how to put it on your blog there too.

My Share This Week...

I thought I would give the prompt a go, it is quite tricky! I sketched her with my non-dominant hand then decided to add a touch of watercolour. Mmm, interesting, I'm sure I will be trying it out again during this month.

Over To You...

Link your faces artwork and spread the word on your blog and/or social media, hashtag #ShowYourFaceFriday. Please do let anyone you think would be interested in sharing their portraits know about our community here.

My Share This Week...

A WIP face from Kim Dellow for Show Your Face

My share this week is a work in progress that I've actually abandoned, so I suppose I should really call it an unfinished piece instead of a work in progress! I used a The Crafter's Workshop stencil to fill in the hair. She is draw with a Sakura pen on an acrylic paint background.

Hey Guys, if you are looking for something a bit painty and a bit textured then pop on over to the Blitsy Blog today!

[I do use affiliate links and there are some in this blog post.]

I'm sharing the making of this mixed media art journal page, it is an abstract piece with lots of lush layers and what's this? No circles? Nope! I've gone all right angles and straight lines this week!

So don't you be square and miss out on seeing it! Did you see what I did there? *Sigh* It has been a long week!

If you fancy seeing how this one was put together then do pop on over to the Blitsy blog and my 'How To Make Abstract Journal Art' tutorial.

My Share This Week...

A mixed media portrait sketch by Kim Dellow

I've just started going to my first ever formal art course, well since school that is and I don't really count school as it was so very, very (very) long ago and I actually dropped art as soon as I was able to, but that is another story for a different time. So I am counting this course as my first formal art course. It is run by my local council and is all about portraiture and emotion, sounds good doesn't it?

The second class was this week and we had a sitter to draw from, which was fun. We spent the class working to different set timed poses, 1min, 5min, 10min, 15min and 30min. This one was the 30 minute pose but I actually did a couple of sketches in that time so it was more like a 15min sketch. I've used watercolour, a water soluble graphite pencil and a charcoal pencil for this piece.

Have you been to any in real life portrait classes? If you have, what lessons did you learn from them, either positive or negative, that you are still using to make your art today?

As Featured On Blitsy - How To Reuse Your Blitsy Box Into A Textured Art Journal Page

It's Blitsy time again and this week I have a tutorial to help you recycle your Blitsy packaging into art!

[I do use affiliate links and there are some in this blog post.]

Kim Dellow Tutorial on Blitsy showing how to turn packaging into art

You know that thing when you are a kid when the box is more fun than the contents? Well, that is exactly what I've been up to with this tutorial this week. Although Bltisy boxes are always full of fun but how about an idea to make the box fun as well? It is perfectly timed too as yesterday was Earth Day so if you have been looking for a recycling project then try this one out!

My Share This Week...

A paint pen face

I was flicking through my junk journals recently and I stumbled across this face that I did last year using paint pens. The odd thing is is that I think it was inspired by someone or something I had seen but I never wrote the inspiration down so now it is only a feeling and I have no recollection of what or why I did it.

My Share This Week...

My Show Your Face share this week is a quick sketch in my junk journal in pen. The page already had some gesso and ink stains from a previous project and to pop her off the page a gave her a squiggly Afro hair. As I was doing it I realised that I had missed a trick and should have done her hair with writing instead of squiggles, perhaps I will try that next time.

PaperArtsy Fresco Finish Acrylic Paints And Ink Resist

You will not be able to resist the current theme over on the PaperArtsy blog because it is Resists! (Oh dear Kim, I think you have been working too hard!). I'm sorry, I could not resist starting with that. Oh boy, I'm doing it again, quick let's move on!

Well, we ARE talking about Resists over on the PaperArtsy blog at the moment and for my blog post I have been experimenting with a resist technique based on the Gouache and ink technique. But as it is PaperArtsy I thought I would have a go with using their Fresco Finish Acrylic Paints instead of Gouache.

If you do not know the Gouache and ink resist technique then basically Gouache will resist waterproof inks like Indian ink (or India ink if you are in the US) and once dry you can wash the ink off with water. Anywhere you did not have Gouache will be the ink and anywhere there was Gouache the ink will come off. So you really have to think positive space and negative space when you are painting the Gouache.

I wasn't even sure that this technique would work with acrylic paint, I mean it is not called the Acrylic Paint Ink Resist Technique after all. So I started with some experiments and tried different brands of acrylic paints. I found that Liquitex works amazingly well with this technique, Golden ok, but not as well as Liquitex.

But what about PaperArtsy Fresco Finish Paints? - FAIL! Nope did not resist the ink at all.

Close up of ink on Fresco Paint

But hey, that ain't gonna stop me. Being a little bit of a chemist at heart I reasoned that adding medium might give the PaperArtsy Fresco Finish Paint properties that would help it to resist the ink.

RESULT! I added the the PaperArtsy Crackle Glaze to the Fresco paint and the technique worked. I've not yet tried the other glazes as the crackle is the only one I have at the moment, but if you try them do come back and let me know how you get on!

Close up of the Fresco Finish ink resist technique

If you want to have a go at this technique too then do visit my Fresco Finish Acrylic Paints And Ink Resist post on the PaperArtsy blog today as my full tutorial is up with all the details and steps you need.

My Share This Week...

I'm calling this week's face 'Beard and Glasses'! It is a man's face, in case you weren't sure :) and is quite a loose piece. Done really quickly with gouache and a brush. I kind of thought it would be fun to do a man for a change and to just be relaxed about the features. It kind of frees you up if you try not to worry about it too much!

My Share This Week...

This week has gone in a whirl and I did not have time to work to the 'Inspired By' theme again. I'm sharing a quick scribble in my junk journal that I'm calling 'Hidden'. I think the green is making her look a little hulk-ish! She is a superwomen, so perhaps I can cheat and say she is following our theme this month and was 'Inspired By' comic book artists? Show Your Face

It is that time again, Friday is here so who is up to share their portraits?

First up the admin...

Schedule:
  • Inspired By - March 2016 (pick another to inspire our work this month, they can be a Facer or someone one else, up to you).
  • Head Positions - May 2016 (try different head potions through the month. Suggested by June Walker)
  •  Quick Draw Faces - July 2016 (set a timer to say 10-15 min - or less if you dare! - and draw a face or several faces in that time. Suggested by Gibby Frogett).
  • Change Hands - September 2016 (try using your non-dominant hand to draw/ paint / make your face this month.

Face dawn with pencil and charcoal

This week I've not used the prompt but did a scribble using graphite and charcoal pencils into my junk journal.

As Featured On Blitsy - How To Make Mixed Media Wall Art

Time for a tutorial share over on the Blitsy blog for the steps to make a textured canvas board project.

[I do use affiliate links and there are some in this blog post.]

Close up on a textured canvas board

You might just be able to tell from this cheeky sneaky peek (I wanted to say peeky then but perhaps that is an -eeky too far?!) that I've used a stencil to build up the texture and then there are several layers using different DecoArt Media paints to build up the colour.

You can see all the steps over on the Blitsy Blog.

Have a fun Saturday you all.

Show Your Face

Hey lovely facers, this week has a been little busy for me here on my blog but please don't worry if you ever come to my blog and can not find the Show Your Face post. Checkout the tabs at the top of the page, I've put in a shortcut so that you can find it straight away. The shortcuts should also show up on the mobile version of this page in the drop down menu under the blog title.

Have you had a chance to see my new video yet? Trish Latimer, editor of Craft Stamper, Tracy Scott, Clare Lloyd and myself have each shared a full tutorial on how we make our faces in real time. It is called  'Creating Faces' and is available to buy now as a DVD, Bluray or via the Traplet online streaming/ download site. There is also a free introduction that you watch to see what the video is about.

My Share This Week...

If you want to know what you can do with the techniques I show in the new Creating Faces video then how about my Show Your Face share this week?

I've used the same basic technique for her as I demonstrate in the video, the only difference is that I've done this one in my junk journal on a painted page and used acrylic paint to colour her eyes, lips and hair band then blocked out the background to help her to pop from the page. In the video I use the Kuretake Gansai Tambi watercolours/gouache paints to colour her eyes and lips and she is drawn on canvas board.

Learn How To Draw And Paint Mixed Media Faces

You all know that I'm pretty much obsessed with drawing and painting faces don't you? If you are a regular to my blog then you can't have helped but notice the weekly community art share link up that I host called Show Your Face. Well if you are fan too of drawing and painting faces on your mixed media projects and in your art journal then you are going to love this new Creating Faces video from the people who bring you Craft Stamper Magazine.

Trish Latimer, editor of Craft Stamper, along with three other designers Tracy Scott, Clare Lloyd and Kim Dellow (Hold on! That is ME!) are sharing how they create their mixed media faces in 'Creating Faces' the video, coming to a DVD player, Bluray player or the Traplet online streaming/ download site NOW!

Creating Faces Video showing how to add faces to your mixed media work

Ok so I might be getting a bit excited, I could hear that deep film announcer guy's voice in my head just now (could you hear him too or was that just me?).

Anyway, I AM pretty excited because, well 1. I'm one of the designers sharing how I make one of my illustrative faces and 2. I've seen all the videos and they are pretty fab! Each designer shares all their tips and tricks and you get to see the whole process in real time.

If you are new to face drawing and painting each designer goes through all the steps they take from start to finish so it is a great place to start. If you are further along with your own face art there are plenty of techniques and tips to add your mixed media toolbox and adapt to your own practice.

Back cover of the Creating Faces video

Creating Faces is available in a choice of formats: £14.95 Bluray, £12.95 DVD £2.50 single download or £8.95 for all four downloads and you can find the Bluray and DVD in the Traplet shop and the downloads on the Traplet streaming/ download page.

But you might want to get yourself along to the Craft Stamper Facebook page as they are doing a GIVEAWAY!

Hope you enjoy watching it as much as we enjoyed putting it together.

Kim
