Art Journal Page: Stencil Rubbing

Art Journal Page using stencil rubbing by Kim Dellow

Did you have a nice and creative weekend? What did you get up to? Manage to throw some paint around, or get some stitching done, or perhaps you did some drawing? Drawing was my weekend creative fun but I'm actually going to start the week with an art journal share.

Did you happen to see my Art Slice video on Friday? If you did spot it on my YouTube Channel then you might recognise part of my share today?

On Friday I shared a super-simple but fun technique that is great to use with stencils, Stencil Rubbing. It is great to go revisit the simple techniques from time to time! So for this technique I used watersoluble pencils and crayons like the Caran D'Ache Neocolor II crayonsFaber-Castell Watercolour Pencils Albrecht Durer and Derwent Inktense Blocks and rubbed them over paper on top of the StencilGirl Loopy Ladders stencil. You get a lovely texture and then if you spray them with water they diffuse and mix for another great look.

My Art Slice video left it there but I didn't leave it there! I then went on to use the stencil rubbing paper to make an art journal page. I cut out a large circle and used Golden Regular Gel to glue it to a Strathmore Mixed Media journal then I used a black Stabilo All pencil to add the dark and grey as I thought it would be a great counterpoint for the bright colour and texture of the stencil rubbing.

I used Fabriano Accademia Artist paper for the pencil rubbing so only gave a light spritz with water as it doesn't like very wet washes but it has a great texture for pencils and crayons. And if you look at the second photograph below you can see the lovely texture.

So if you did some stencil rubbing over the weekend I hope that my share today has given you some more inspiration of what to do with them. If you are looking for some more quick inspiration then do go and subscribe to my YouTube channel, I am regularly posting ideas on there, so don't miss out!

Have a fun and creative week and do share any of the projects you are planning to do this week, I would love to know.

VIDEO: Technique: PaperArtsy Infusions Coloured Gel Medium

Technique: PaperArtsy Infusions Coloured Gel Medium by Kim Dellow

What is that you say? Another video?! That is right! I have a surprise, bonus video to share with you today sharing a fun technique using PaperArtsy Infusions to colour gel medium. So rather than just a static blog post share of my project I have a video walking through the whole process of how to use Infusions to Colour Gel Medium and then use the gel through a stencil.

Like the video that I made for the Gelli Printed Collage Art journal page from a couple of weeks ago, it is all to music with no voice over. But hopefully it is clear what I am doing and if you have any question then please do just ask in the comments!

You can use this technique with any powdered pigments and I first shared it a while back for my 'How To Decorate A Mesh Bag With Ken Oliver Color Burst' blog post whilst I was working for Blitsy. In that blog post I used the Ken Oliver's Colour Burst, to colour gel medium and decorate a pencil case. You can also use Brushos too with this technique but this time I am using Infusions.

[There are some affiliate links in this blog post, so if you buy through them I do get a small amount of money at no extra cost to yourself. Thanks for your support!]

close up of the Technique: PaperArtsy Infusions Coloured Gel Medium by Kim Dellow

The PaperArtsy Infusions are another powdered pigment product but they differ from Brushos and Colour Burst in that they also have a walnut stain crystal in with the pigment. The walnut stain develops more slowly than the pigment when you use the product with liquids and so you get a brown colour developing after the colour has developed. The walnut gives the Infusion colour an interesting antiqued and textured look.

But when you use the Infusions mixed in with gel medium, like the Golden Regular Gel the walnut doesn't develop but instead the crystals act as a grit to give the surface a texture when the gel is dry. Take a look at the close up photograph below to see what I mean!

Two tips for you: you need to use the gloss gel as this is completely transparent when dry and add as little or as much Infusions as you need, tap them on the gel bit by bit and just mix them in.

It's totally fun to play with so watch the video and then go have a play yourself!

VIDEO: Timelapse Art Journal Page - Gelli Plate Collage

Gelli Plate collage journal page by Kim Dellow

I've a little treat for you today. I was working on some art journal pages for my blog post today, thinking that I would do another art journal page share like I did for last Friday's blog post. But this time I decided to film the whole thing in case something came out of it. So instead of just sharing project pictures today with you today I have a little extra in the form of a timelapse video showing the whole process for this art journal share. I hope you enjoy it!

The page is built in my junk journal and I've used layers of paint with some Gelli plate prints using paints and stencils then used these printed papers to build up a focal point with layers. I didn't have time to add a voice over so it is just set to music, but if there is anything you want to know just ask either below in the comments or over on my YouTube Channel!

VIDEO: Textured And Layered Art Journal Page Using Stamped Layers And Watercolours

Kim Dellow Layered and textured art journal page

If you didn't think you could make a textured, layered watercolour art journal page then I hope that my video today will change your mind! We are all quite use to using acrylic paints to add layers to our art journal pages but how about watercolour layering? It is a little harder as watercolour will react to water even after it is dry but it is still possible to work on a watercoloured background without it washing away!

And as for adding texture with watercolours, well there are lots of methods some you might be very familiar with such as using large salt grains or crunched up cling film or Saran wrap, but there are other methods too like using stencils and I share one way to use your stencils to add texture to your watercolours today along with methods for layering and creating this art journal page.

Three Art Journal Pages To Share

Happy Friday everyone! Have you got any creative projects planned for the weekend? I've got something new to share with you this weekend, so keep your eyes peeled. Try coming back on Sunday evening (GMT) to find out more!

But I can not share it yet so instead I'm sharing some recent art journal page projects and I hope they get you in the mood for your own creative plans this weekend!

[There are some affiliate links in this blog post, so if you buy through them I do get a small amount of money at no extra cost to yourself. Thanks for your support!]

Art journal page using inks, paints and pens Page 1, By Kim Dellow #KimDellow

I've got three pages from my flyer junk journals to share and I hope that you are in the mood for abstract because they are all a bit on the abstract side! I know I am a bit circle-obsessed at the moment, I am still trying to work the circles out of my system, but I think it will never happen!

This page is formed of DecoArt Media black gesso lines with paint pen and white acrylic paint highlights. The background colour is some Turner Acryl Gouache Colour Pearl Red, I think, as it has a bit of iridescent shine to it. It is leftover colour from another project and was put down a while ago now but the page just sang out for more work as I flicked through it!

close up of Art journal page using inks, paints and pens Page 1, By Kim Dellow #Kim Dellow

For the next page I dripped the Liquitex Muted Turquoise and Muted Green inks onto a page that I had cleaned off blue paint from my brush in a previous project. Once the ink was dry I went around the drips with Liquitex white gesso slightly tinted with a purple watercolour paint.

It was totally happenstance rather than design that the gesso took on this tint as the purple paint was dried onto the palette that I used for the gesso. But it was definitely a happy happenstance and why you shouldn't always clean up after yourself, well least that is my excuse!

I then further detailed the drips with the paint pen.

Art journal page using inks, paints and pens Page 2 circles, By Kim Dellow #Kim Dellow

The final journal page share today is very much based on the circle shapes that have been plaguing my work recently! And you have probably seen them cropping up again and again in my daily draws and art slice videos over on Instagram, if you follow me there.

This page was built on a page I had used to clean off a stencil in a previous project and in fact I know exactly which project that was as it was my 'How To Make An Art Journal Page With Shiva Artist's Paintstiks' project! So the background marks where made using DecoArt Black Modeling paste on The Crafter's Workshop Sweet Posey stencil.

Art journal page using inks, paints and pens Page 3 iridescent, By Kim Dellow #Kim Dellow

It then has a layer of Liquitex gesso and once that was dry I used a layer of Golden Regular Gel (Gloss) over the top. But then I did something that perhaps you would not expect - I used watercolour over the top. I love using watercolours over gel medium, the dried gel layer is not absorbent so the colour pools and resists in really interesting ways which is fun to play with! I used the Prima Marketing Decadent Pies as I love the dark/ paynes grey/ blue- like colour and the gold that are in this set.

This was then finished with the paint pen again and a totally circle-centric abstract design. You can see the gold watercolour catching the light on the picture below.

I hope your weekend is full of creative wonder. Oh and don't forget to check back here on Sunday evening (GMT) for something new! Nudge, nudge, wink, wink, I will say no more. You will just have to come back and see, won't you?

VIDEO: How To Make A Patterned Paper Flower Cluster Art Journal Page

Art Journal Page using cut outs by Kim Dellow

It's video time and this week I have an art journal page to share. For this video I thought it would be fun to use some patterned paper and a pen to make a flower cluster for my art journal page. I've got way too much patterned paper and I am trying to make good use of it, so this type of project is perfect! It is also a perfect project for using up oddments and those small pieces of paper that you just can't bring yourself to throw away. Well, I can't anyway!

So if you have too much patterned paper, like me, or a collection of bits of paper you need to find homes for, also guilty as charged, then you are going to love this project!

There is something really relaxing about cutting out bits of paper, isn't there? I do love a bit of collage. It's even more fun to then go and doodle your own flower designs over it!

I would love to hear what projects you have been using cut outs for and what you do with your left over patterned papers, so do let me know.

Gouache Paint Flower Buds Art Journal Page

I'm revisiting a project today for my Friday post, well it isn't so much a project revisit as a project extension. Back in September last year I shared an Art Slice videos showing me painting three flower buds in a pink circle design. Perhaps you saw it? I've embedded it below in case you didn't.

Anyway, at the time that I made that film I had no intention of doing anything further with that design but after letting it sit for a while I wondered what the design would look like as a journal page and so this project was born.

[I do use affiliate links and there are some in this blog post.]

Mixed media art journal page on kraft paper by Kim Dellow

The original artwork was done on watercolour paper but for this art journal page I am working in a Seawhite square Kraft workbook. The background is a square collaged using old book pages and Golden Regular Gel in the centre of the page then, when it was dry I covered it with Golden Absorbent Grounds to give it some tooth for the paint to grab on to.

I used the same paint as I used in the original piece and that was the Caran d' Ache Gouache set, which is a dry pan gouache set rather than a wet tube paint.  I added in some details to the painting such as the paint flicks and the scribble writing with a liner pen to add a bit more texture.

You can see all the details in these close up photos:

Close up of the scribble pen texture by Kim Dellow

It is interesting to see this design as a more mixed media piece as when I made the original piece for the Art Slice video it was more a clean look that I was going for. But I think it can work with either as a clean illustrative style or in this more distressed painty style. What do you think?

If you did miss it first time around here is the original video that inspired this art journal page and if you visit my December Art Slice Round-Up blog post you can see a couple of behind the scenes photos featuring the original flower bud design.

So looking back over your recent and past projects what art will you be re-working and reusing into your next projects?

Let me know or better still do it and then come back and leave me a link to it!

VIDEO: How To Make A Gouache Paint And Paint Pen Art Journal Page

How To Make A Gouache Paint And Paint Pen Art Journal Page video by Kim Dellow

Do you remember this project? I shared a little clip of it in December as one of my Art Slices videos for that month. Well this week I am sharing the whole project as a video. It's made using Gouache paint, a little bit of acrylic paint and line work with a paint pen. I've already mentioned here on my blog how I am enjoying playing with Gouache paints so they were a natural grab for me when making this page. Then the line work is really an extension of the work I have been doing over on Instagram with my #DellowDailyDrawing or my watercolour shares.

I hope that you enjoy the video showing how to make an art journal page using Gouache paint and a paint pen. I'm trying something new for me and my video making, I have used a mix of voice over and music, so you are seeing the whole page as it happens but as a timelapse to keep the video short. Let me know what you think!

5 Art Journal Page Ideas To Play With in 2017

2016 has been a fun year in my art journal, perhaps a bit messy at times but that is all part of the joy of art journaling isn't it? I've been going back through the work I've been doing in my art journal this year and I have collected together some ideas to inspire our art journal work for 2017!

So if you are into your art journaling I hope that some of these ideas will inspire you for the New Year and if you are new to art journaling then it is never too late to give it a go!

[I do use affiliate links and there are some in this blog post.]

1. Don't Resist The Urge To Resist!

Resists are great! Everyone loves a good resist and there are so many different ways to make a resist. Looking back through my 2016 art journals I have found that I use resist techniques quite a lot this year! I definitely wasn't resisting the urge.

A basic resist is about adding a layer to your surface that will resist whatever you put on top of it. In art you have lots of different ways you can do this so try these:

a) The Gel Medium Resist:

Art Journal page made using by Kim Dellow using gel medium resist

Apply gel medium through a stencil, let it dry then add colour over the top. You can see all the steps for this page my 'How To Make A Tim Holtz Distress Crayon Art Journal Page' blog post on the Blitsy Blog.

b) The Embossing Powder Resist:

Kim Dellow using embossing powder as a paint resist

Use stamping and heat emboss with embossing powder to make a resist for paint. Again I have a full step by step tutorial for this project over on the 'How To Get A Faux-Print Look With Paint And Embossing Powder' post on the Blitsy post.

c) China Markers On Yupo

Kim Dellow using china marker resist

China markers, or chinagraph pencils, are a wax pencil that writes on all sort of surfaces including shiney paper like Yupo! So it is great for drawing a resist pattern and you can even use it as a resist for alchol inks. You can find them in art shops and some stationery shops. If you want to see how I made the project above, there is a tutorial on the Blitsy blog in my 'How To Get A Resist Pattern On Yupo' blog post.

2. Make The Most Of Leftover Paint

It gets said a lot in art journaling circles but it is always worth repeating - don't waste any paint! Whatever project I am doing, whether it is in an art journal or another surface I always clean tools on spare pages in my junk and art journals.

It is a great way to get rid of clean page fear, you know, when your mind goes blank when faced with a clean page and you don't want to 'ruin' it! It is also a great way to hook yourself in to your next journal page as flicking through a book of colourful pages inspires you to get stuck in.

Here are a couple of examples of projects made on leftover paint pages, the first one builds on the leftover paint, using it as a background and in the second one I drew and stamped around the leftover paint and incorporated it as part of the image.

Kim Dellow Turning leftover paint into art journal backgrounds

Kim Dellow tuning leftover paint into a drawing

3. Doodle-Fill That Page!

Pattern is one of the things I have been getting into big time this year and I've been having fun filling pages of my journals with random collections of patterns and motifs. This is also a great project for doing over those leftover paint pages too!

Art journal pages don't have to always be a rounded piece of art work they can just be places to play and experiment and filling a page with shapes and mark making is a perfect for an art journal and a great way to build up some of your pattern making skills for other projects.

Kim Dellow filling pages in her art journal with pattern

4. Use Your Ink Refills

So you refill your ink pads with those little bottles of refill ink right? Well you know you can use them as they are as well don't you? Of course you do! And if you didn't, you do now!

It's the often forgotten colouring material, you do not need a lot of the ink as a drop can go a long way.

If you want to see how then guess what? I have a tutorial using refill ink to make this page below, it is in a blog post handily called  'How To Make an Art Journal Page With Refill Inks'!

Kim Dellow's art journal page made using refill inks

5. The Humble Biro

Well actually the humble any ballpoint pen! I love drawing with ballpoint pens, some of you might have noticed! Find a nice ballpoint pen that has a good flow of ink and doesn't splodge ink everywhere and you have a fabulous drawing tool. And it doesn't have to break the bank either, you can get some really good ballpoint pens for practically pennies and it lots of different colours too, so they are well worth adding to your art tool box if you do not use them already.

Art journaling with ballpoint pens by Kim Dellow

I use them for all sorts of projects and they work on a lot of surfaces including paint, like this leftover paint page in my junk journal.

So that is it for now, five ideas to get you jumping and hopefully inspire your Art Journaling for 2017. They are great ones to revisit and build upon so have fun and if you have any of your favourites you would like to share then feel free to leave me a comments below.

Art Journal Page Sharing

I have some art journal pages to share again with you today, this time last week I shared three art journal projects, two from my junk journal, this week I have three more to share. All six projects were made around about the same time, so there is some cross over in the materials used and the style and look for some of them. But they are all different too.

This first page that I am sharing with you is a sister to the Art Slice mini-video 'Bubble Art Journal' that I shared on the 11th November.

Kim Dellow Art Journal page swirls

It is worked on the same acrylic paint background which was made using the new Liquitex Muted Collection paints. I've added a cluster of tight swirls with a white Sharpie paint pen and a looser, large swirl drawn with a black Sharpie paint pen. I've also added in some lettering and a cluster of thick short line marks.

If you watch the Art Slice mini-video 'Bubble Art Journal Art Slice. you will get a good idea of how I put the background together for this.

The next share is something a little different. It is a ballpoint pen sketch on a gesso page in my Junk Journal.

Kim Dellow geometric shapes art journal page

I was playing with geometric shapes and just organically doodling away to see what would happen. I quite like the mix of straight lines with curves. It was almost meditative doing this page, I was only going to do a few shapes then it turned into a large, page filling pattern of shapes.

For my final share another swirl-inspired project like the first project above.

This one uses paint pen swirls, heart and lettering on an acrylic paint and junk journal background. I think the green of the picture from the junk journal page really adds to the final look of the project, but then that is the joy of using junk journals isn't it?

Shout if you have some journal pages you want to share, I would love to see so leave a comment with a link below.

Sharing Art Journal Projects

I've been really enjoying getting back into doing my art for myself this week. I don't know if this happens to you, but often I find that my own work can fall by the wayside when I have deadlines to meet and art to do for other people. But this week I have, for once, got ahead of my deadlines and have found some space in my schedule to do some play in my junk journals. So I thought I would share with you some of the results. It is a mixed batch of different things but with a common theme, which I seem to be going back to a lot at the moment, and that is black line work on a colour background.

The first one isn't actually in my journal but on some watercolour paper and is along the same lines as my recent 'Watercolour Worlds' Art Slice. You can see the video for that one over on my YouTube Channel if you haven't seen it already. It will give you an idea of how I did this one as I used the same technique, just a different pen.

Kim Dellow Watercolour and paint pen floral cluster art

I've used Prima Marketing watercolours with a Sharpie paint pen to make this floral cluster design. I'm pretty obsessed with watercolour shapes and inked detail at the moment, you may have noticed?! Got to work it out of my system!

Next show-and-tell art journal page is a couple of mandalas drawn with a ballpoint pen over the top of some leftover colour, where I've just cleaned my mark making tools in my journal.

Kim Dellow ballpoint pen mandalas

The paint in the background is some of the PaperArtsy Fresco Finish paints. They make a really nice surface to draw over with an ordinary ballpoint pen, it is their chalky finish. I blocked out the spaces between the two mandalas with some fine lines using the pen.

The last share I have for you today is some pattern play in one of my junk journals. Actually this page is opposite the page above, but I've folded it over for the photography.

It's also based on a leftover paint page and I've worked the pattern with a white and a black Sharpie paint pen. It is really just an experimental piece trying to extend my patterns and try out different looks. There are no rules I just try to fill the page with different marks and shapes. It's fun, you should try it if you don't do it already!

I hope you have had some time in your schedule to play in your journals too, do share if you have, drop me a link below. I look forward to seeing them!

AS FEATURED ON: The PaperArtsy Blog - Video Using Die cuts

I'm over on the PaperArtsy blog today with a new walkthrough video. The theme for the PaperArtsy challenge at the moment is 'Die Cuts' so my video shows a start to finish process video for an art journal page using some of my latest PaperArtsy products and Fresco Finish paints.

Kim Dellow: Art journals page for PaperArtsy using die cuts

I am using my third stamp set, PaperArtsy Eclectica³ {Kim Dellow} Stamps EKD03, with my new stencils to decorate this page. Yep! If you haven't seen them yet I have three new stencils as part of my PaperArtsy range! They should be hitting the shops soon so keep an eye out for them. I'm super excited about them because I do love stencils and I quite often make my own from paper and card so having some of my very own long-lasting Mylar ones is fantastic!

In the video I am covering various ideas for how to incorporate die-cuts in art journal pages such as using them to build focal points or for adding texture and dimension and even for using them as a tool to help add colour during the making of the page. They are some of my favourite die cut and mixed media mash-up techniques that I am sharing, so I hope you have fun with them too!

Kim Dellow: close up of an Art journals page for PaperArtsy using die cuts

The die-cut challenge is running on the PaperArtsy blog until 16th Oct 2016 and if you add your PaperArtsy-inspired make to their challenge page you could win £50 to spend in the shop, so don't forget to link up your work!

You can see the video either over on the PaperArtsy blog or over on my YouTube channel. I also have a mini tutorial on the PaperArtsy blog with still photos if you can't watch the video at the moment because you boss is in the office and you forgot your headphones *wink*!

Right, I'm off! Catch you later!

This week has just been full of tutorials for me. Monday I had a full step by step for an art journal page made using stamping and masking here on my blog, Wednesday I uploaded a technique video to my YouTube Channel and now, today, I have a tutorial over on the Blitsy blog.

Actually the tutorial today follows on perfectly from my technique video from Wednesday and went part way to inspiring it. Because today's tutorial is all about using powders, the Mica and Artisan powders from Prima Marketing and my video on Wednesday was also about using water-soluble powdered pigments, but different ones. Both tutorials involve a bit of embossing ink to apply the powders and show what amazing effects you can get with different powders.

I went for a bit of a seaside theme this week, it was totally unintentional but with Summer in full swing I can't help but think of walks on the beach, can you or is that just me? I've also managed to squeeze a little bit of brush writing in this page which is definitely still a hot trend!

Do go take a look at my Blitsy blog post 'How To Make A Mica Powder Journal Page'. Then check out my new technique video on YouTube, or here on my blog. I hope they give you lots of ideas about how you can use these techniques to apply water-soluble pigment powders to your next project.

Happy beach time you all!

As Featured On Blitsy: How To Make an Art Journal Page With Refill Inks

I've got a new art journaling tutorial to share with you, it is over on the Blitsy blog and it is quite colourful!

But that is ok, because we all LOVE colour don't we? Oh yes! We can never have too much colour in our lives don't you think? I do hope so because I've gone all out with my colour for this week's Blitsy tutorial using refill ink. You know the little bottles you get to refill your ink pads? Yep, they are the ones!

I don't know about you but I get those little bottles and use them to fill up my ink pads but the rest of the time they can just sit in a box. Well, they are going to sit in that box no longer now! It's a great way of making the products you buy really work for you! I've used them with gel medium and tissue paper but you can see all the details over on the Blitsy blog in my 'How To Make an Art Journal Page With Refill Inks' blog post.

Hopefully, I will persuade you to use your ink refills too if you aren't already! I've also used refill inks with gelatine plates for monoprinting before and they are quite good for adding colour to mediums if you are looking for some more ideas on how to get the most from them.

So what about you? Do you use your ink refills for? Have you used them for something other than refilling your ink pads? Do let me know!
